Jeff Buckley – Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen cover) Lyrics 16 years ago
Such a poignant song, it’s had such an effect on me… and many others it would seem. Such divergent views too, some see a spiritual theme to this song, while others are reminded of orgasm. For me, I see both these themes coming together here... a “broken hallelujah”. Our sexuality, our spirituality, our humanness and our sacredness every part of us is both broken and holy. We are much loved, and were made for so much more than the hurt we see in our relationships. Our spirit seems to suspect “that there’s a God above”… yet we remain wounded in our separation... “You say I took the name in vain, I don't even know the name, But if I did, well really, what's it to you? For me the beauty and the sadness of this song is that God has made a way for us to reconnect with him and to mend our brokenness…but either we don’t know that or more often that not, we reject it… and are left with a “cold and a broken hallelujah”.

U2 – Get On Your Boots Lyrics 16 years ago
I had a bit of an epiphany about this song the other day. I feel their is a connection in the themes between this song, "Stand Up Comedy" and "Breath" In that they are all calling those who love God to get out there into our community and live loud God’s love, as opposed to preaching at people! Walk the talk, lead by example instead of just getting in peoples faces. For me "sexy boots" is referring to "beautiful feet" (as in "how beautiful are the feet of them who bring good news") Below is the scripture taken from "The Message Bible" - my favourite version and according to the books jacket cover Bono’s too.
11-13Scripture reassures us, "No one who trusts God like this–heart and soul–will ever regret it." It's exactly the same no matter what a person's religious background may be: the same God for all of us, acting the same incredibly generous way to everyone who calls out for help. "Everyone who calls, 'Help, God!' gets help."
14-17But how can people call for help if they don't know who to trust? And how can they know who to trust if they haven't heard of the One who can be trusted? And how can they hear if nobody tells them? And how is anyone going to tell them, unless someone is sent to do it? That's why Scripture exclaims,

A sight to take your breath away!
Grand processions of people
telling (living out) all the good things of God!
But not everybody is ready for this, ready to see and hear and act. Isaiah asked what we all ask at one time or another: "Does anyone care, God? Is anyone listening and believing a word of it?" The point is: Before you trust, you have to listen. But unless Christ's Word is preached (in action), there's nothing to listen to. (Romans chapter 10)
In Bono’s words, to everyone who loves God…
“We are people borne of sound
The songs are in our eyes
Gonna wear them like a crown

Walk out, into the sunburst street
Sing your heart out, sing my heart out
I've found grace inside a sound
I found grace, it's all that I found
And I can breathe
Breathe now”
