Well dude. To me right now, this song seems to be speaking to me about my broken relationship. Simply, if you can't isolate what a specific word in a given language means to the perception of an entire nation, how can you hope to determine, with such arrogance, that this song has 'one' meaning? I can use the lyrics in this song to describe a number of different circumstances in life. Sure, it may have been created to suite only one, initially. But the beauty of it, is that through forums like this, and through the hearts of the fans, it's become so much more. This is the definition of 'bitter-sweet poetry'. You can't get angry about what it means to other people... Now... if you want to conform to what the artist's say the song is 'supposed' to be about (which is something they know really doesn't matter anyway) then go ahead and sheep yourself into a follower. It's in your right, "totally". :) |

| Citizen Cope – Let the Drummer Kick Lyrics | 16 years ago |

I agree with the guy above me, his interpretation sounds very close to the meaning + story of the song meant to inspire change in people. And whether the song is saying 'expiration' or 'inspiration' at the end of the song, death is what inspires and determines creation of all beings. Death is what drives and changes, re-shapes all things. Re-creation. So I think the most important message of the song is to say to all, that whatever is holding you back from your fate, your volition to create, you must overcome to transcend the hardships. So when he says 'let the drummer kick that' he's saying 'find a passion and a purpose to surpass your shortcomings and embrace a destiny of your choosing'. Let the beat of life, the drummer, your heart, the will to live, kick the poison of sin and convulsion. If he's saying 'let the drummer kid die', then to those who hear it, he's saying leave those childish distractions and vices behind and grasp a better life. Not necessarily better, but more appropriate to your desires to fulfill your place on earth as a human being. |
