Well, i'm going to look into the obvious meaning to this song.. As it has many meanings, I believe. But, I will stick to the first meaning I saw. Two friends, happy together showing off to each other. But, they come to a point in their lives where they must choose a path, and typically they choose different paths. Then, the first verse is about the one who chose to be a "free roamer": "Look at me, look at me hands in the air like it's good to be ALIVE and I'm a famous rapper even when the paths are all crooked-ly I can show you how to do-si-do I can show you how to scratch a record I can take apart the remote control And I can almost put it back together I can tie a knot in a cherry stem I can tell you about Leif Erikson I know all the words to "De Colores" And "I'm Proud to be an American" Me and my friend saw a platypus Me and my friend made a comic book And guess how long it took I can do anything that I want cuz, look:" It explains how this one, feels happy and he can do some few basic stuff "stratch a record".. he can do anything, he feels possible, and he is proud of it. He describes what him and his new friends can do. And how he loves it. Then, the second verse is about the one that chose business: "Look at me Look at me Just called to say that it's good to be ALIVE In such a small world I'm all curled up with a book to read I can make money open up a thrift store I can make a living off a magazine I can design an engine sixty four Miles to the gallon of gasoline I can make new antibiotics I can make a computer survive aquatic conditions I know how to run a business And I can make you wanna buy a product Movers, shakers, and producers Me and my friends understand the future I see the strings that control the systems I can do anything with no assistance" The instant thing I realised with this, that in differentiation with the first verse he says "Just called to say that it's good to be alive" instead of "hands in the air like it's good to be alive".. Which suggests the free roamer is having a hard time, but still enjoys it. And the business man, is simply living a good life. The business friend feels he can do what he pleases, invent what he wants, how he can do stuff, and he doesn't need help with any of it. Then, in the third verse, the business man loses control, becomes power hungry.. he feels above everything, above the law, that he really can do anything.. "Look at me Look at me Driving and I won't stop And it feels so good to be Alive and on top My reach is global My tower secure My cause is noble My power is pure I can hand out a million vaccinations Or let'em all die from exasperation Have'em all healed from their lacerations Or have'em all killed by assassination I can make anybody go to prison Just because I don't like 'em And I can do anything with no permission I have it all under my command" This leads, and interwines with the choruses, we can see the power is getting to him already, but the choruses show they have got to him.. but, off that for now; The first chorus: "I can keep rhythm with no metronome No metronome No metronome And I can see your face on the telephone On the telephone On the telephone" These are simple things, but make the free roamer.. him. He feels free, proud that he can keep rhythm without the use of a tool (maybe a hint to the fact, he doesn't need tools to make a living, when the business man does "I can make living of a magazine") and he can see someone on a telephone. But, the second chorus is the same, but for the business man: "Cause I can lead a nation with a microphone With a microphone With a microphone And I can split the atoms of a molecule Of a molecule Of a molecule" The business man is saying he has all power, and all he needs to do is speak into a microphone.. And a sense of boasting is made when he says he can split atoms of a molecule. Onto the last chorus: "Because I can guide a missile by satellite By satellite By satellite And I can hit a target through a telescope Through a telescope Through a telescope And I can end the planet in a holocaust In a holocaust In a holocaust In a holocaust In a holocaust In a holocaust" The business man continues to boast about what he can do, and the tone of his voice, implied by the extra lines "in a holocaust" shows the definite craziness, or want of power. Which, gets to him on the last line.. Then comes the free roamer, a reminder of the beginning.. before the two paths were chosen (back to the beginning of the song): "I can ride my bike with no handlebars No handlebars No handlebars" Which just shows, because the free roamer is living an ordinary life, without much power, without tools to help him make a living, with nothing.. he is fine, he can ride his bike with no handlebars. I would also like to say that perhaps the bike is life, and handlebars are tools? It makes sense, the free roamer can live his life (ride his bike) without any help to do so (with no handlebars).. Whereas the businessman can't. He needs tools, which is why he keeps reminding us of the tools. Overall, I love the song. |

| Well, this song meaning is simple. He doesn't believe that having to buy expensive gifts to show his love for someone, he doesn't even feel singing the song will tell her how he feels. But, he wants to be with her. And.. he loves her. He feels, he thinks the only real way to show affection, is to do it "the easy way".. Telling them, you love them straight up. | |

The meaning to this song, in my eyes, is pretty obvious. I would say it's about todays youth (the title Young suggests this). And how we were born in a time of distress, turmoil. And "I see the children in the rain, like the parade before the pain" - Suggests that the singer see's the children playing in the rain, happily (like in a parade), before the pain (fights?) hits them. The rest of it is self-explanitory. So in brief, HU merely touch on all the problems with todays society, and how they are put down for no reason; "But you take all we are, the innocence of our hearts. Made to kneel before the alter as you tear us apart.". As well as many other points in todays society, such as all the violence (especially here in the UK) on the streets at the moment; "In these streets, these fields of battle". It also describes how numb the teens are, and how they are unwanted in todays society, but above it all they will still keep going, with hope in their eyes.. they won't go without a fight; "We will fight (We will fight)". The song even touches on what youth do to overcome this, they act how everyone say's they are like; "Yes we wave this flag of hatred" then it gives reason WHY they hold it "but you're the ones who made it". Very powerful song; "Youths today, are put down. Have a wrong image. But, above it all, they stay strong; and put up with it".. for me, that's the meaning. My favourite song of theirs so far. |
