I think the meaning of the song is very clear without need for extra interpretation; the lyrics supply their own meaning. We will get extra context when the film comes out, however, in terms of the part played by the various birds in the story. After all, the three birds can be seen in the Imaginaerum symbol, so they must be important. ;-) |

To me, the singer sounds sinister, like a vampire or some other beautiful-seeming monster that's trying to gently lure in her prey. It seems like quite a few Nightwish albums have creepy-sexy songs like this: Whoever Brings the Night, The Siren, maybe even Nymphomaniac Fantastia if we choose to acknowledge its existence. ;-) |

I agree that the river represents life. I think I read somewhere that Tuomas said that Marco's voice represents Satan and Anette's represents Gaia. If that's true, then Satan tries to persuade the wayfarer that the river will inevitably lead to a horrible end; he tries to bring the wayfarer to despair, to not even try because the river holds only doom. Gaia denies this and encourages the traveller to hope: in spite of the dangers, plunge into the river; there is wonder and joy to be found as well as darkness. |

I don't think she's asking for forgiveness per se (as that implies that she thinks what happened was her fault, which I don't think she does), but for reconciliation. She and the band have different points of view, but that doesn't mean they have to be enemies. They can set aside their old differences and wish each other well. At this stage, to be honest, I think they've done that. Time does a lot to heal old wounds.
Honestly, of all the songs in which she seems to be referring to herself and Nightwish, this is the only one where the sentiment really appeals to me. Most of the others have this "poor me, I was so wronged" vibe, but this one doesn't seem to play the blame game. I like that. |

I agree mostly. I think it's saying that Satan has in fact died, but his death goes unnoticed because humans commit so many awful deeds that we take his place. |

I didn't think the voice saying "The Enemy" had an American accent...
However, I have to say: I can't stop listening to this song. It's so powerful!
To me, the main message is about how people in power use poorer people like tools, sacrificing their lives and indoctrinating them in the propaganda of war in order to maintain their own positions. It really disgusts me, because I know it's true - it's human nature. Sometimes we're not very nice... |

Me too. I can't listen to this song without crying, so I often skip it, even though I think it's so beautiful. I just miss my dear dog so much, who died last year, and it's so sad to be reminded of it. Tony's right: even though you know your dog's almost certainly going to die before you do, you always think you'll have more time than you do. These bonds give us so much happiness, but it's hard to leave them behind when the time comes. Darn it, my eyes are leaking again! |

I completely agree with Dark Artist too. This is a song about writer's block. Tuomas feels tired and uninspired, yet he feels a duty to write because some people's lives were saved by his music. This song is him doing the best he can to transform even this feeling into a song. |
