I think this song is about feeling isolated by the world around you. The outside world is percieved as the enemy and cornell wishes to either end his life or destroy the world. Although he knows that's impossible, it doesn't stop him from reflecting on the idea. |

Without reading anyone else's comments first, I'm going to say that it sounds as if Maynard is at a funeral for someone very close to him, likely his father because I don't know of anyone else he would consider his 'perfect enemy' either in life or just through memories. He's having trouble accepting the death and regretting things that were unsaid between them and wishing they would 'wake up and face me(him)'. That's my best interpretation. |

I think it's amazing how many different meanings can be gotten from the same song and they all make sense in some way yet the true meaning is one that only the author could have known. I would have never thought of what Maynard describes in this quote but I see how it fits. |

APC definitely has given this song a very haunting quality that frankly took me a couple of listens before I could appreciate it. This works when you truly think deeply about the content. While John Lennon's original version sounded very optimistic, the content can also be seen in a more serious, almost daunting way. "Imagine there's no heaven" could be a terrifying thought to some and a liberating one to others. The same can be said for most of the other concepts in the song. I think APC has put a very effective and thought-provoking spin on this classic that should be admired. |

Drugs do seem to be a big part of the struggle in this song. I think it's about not being able to quit on your own and desperatley seeking help because you've decided you want help and "choose to live." |

I'm not completely certain that "call an optomist" is the correct lyric but I can still make sense of it. The line that follows says "what a lovely color for you," if someone is watching other person die or suffer and they are turning blue, the only type of person that would make such a comment would have to be a naive optomist that has completely detached themself from the situation. This is just a thought, as I said I'm not sure that those are the right lyrics. |
