I think this song is about being afraid to be in a relationship with someone or being afraid to be public, or both. “We're on a wire but it's better than drowning And I don't care if I fall cuz I've never been higher” The relationship isn’t really steady so it’s easy to fail, but she’s so happy that it might work at all that she doesn’t care if it works out or not because at least she got a taste of it. “Could you be safe in my arms, and scared at the same time Running towards and away 'til you're standing still” The other person wants to stay with her but the other person is afraid of how everyone else reacts and the person’s mind keeps changing. “The mystery's calling, come if you dare And find what is there when you tear down the walls” She wants this person to just tear down all the person’s fears of how people will think and just come to her, because she is on the other side, waiting. “No you're gonna wait til the moment is certain While I've been out searching for reasons to fall” But she knows that the other person will probably not go until the person is sure that going for it will be worth it in the long haul while she is still on that wire & waiting for the rejection so she can “fall”. |

i heard it there too along with "reasons to fall" which is another amazing song by hoffman. in the very beginning of the song, it sort of sounds like a gunshot in the background, so i'm thinking when "she stumbles over a memory" it's the place where she shot this person, making them die & become a ghost. she regrets this decision, by repeatedly saying sorry to the "ghost" but telling that she can't go back and change her actions. in most of the song, she infers that the ghost is still around & watching her, and if this next stanza she ponders if the ghost (probably a former lover) is waiting for her to move on to someone else to fill her up, but she tells the ghost to close its eyes because it won't happen. "But, If you've been here all the while Watching me drift by and by Waiting for something to fill me up Ghost close your eyes" of course, this could be all an extended metaphor for someone she just gave up or broke up with or something. "Sometimes you lose everything Or gave it away well it's hard to say now" |
