Foo Fighters – Best Of You Lyrics 16 years ago
Moving on is always hard, but as I experienced recently, in the end it's the best thing you can do. No relationship is worth it when it brings you more pain and sorrow than anything else. And you can only find happiness with someone else if you find happiness for yourself first. Good luck in that.

Jimmy Eat World – Carry You Lyrics 16 years ago
Very good song and the meaning of it has been explained by alot of people on here already. I think anyone who has seen a serious relationship end, has felt like this at some point. Even though you know the relationship ended for a reason and you're actually not a good match together, you tell yourself that things could be different, thinking about the past and in a way that past together looks brighter when you're not together anymore. But in the end, as they sing, the moment past so you have to let it go. Only then will you be able to find someone else who is a better match to you.

Editors – Papillon Lyrics 16 years ago
They played this song acoustic for a Belgian radio station. It sounded fantastic!

To me the song is about how you shouldn't count on some higher power to help you when things go bad. Like some people put all their faith in God, giving up the fight themselves.

'Darling, now don't put down your guns yet
If there really was a God here
He'd have raised a hand by now'
- You have to fight for your own life and future, 'cause if there would be a God (s)he would have helped already.

'Now darling, you're born, get old and die here
That's quite enough for me
We'll find our own way home somehow'
- The only thing we can be certain of is that we're born here and we will die here too. That's enough though, 'cause all that's in between is for ourselves to find out.

'You will choke, choke on the air you try to breathe'
- Figuratively speaking it says that if you continue to just put faith in a higher power to help you, not putting in a fight yourself, you will get nowhere.

Anyway, that's what I make of it. The title 'Papillon' (which is French for butterfly) fits well with this (e.g. free as a butterlfy).

Tom McRae – You Only Disappear Lyrics 16 years ago
Great song. It's obviously about losing someone. On the one hand he sings he can live with his regrets and still raise a smile, but in the end he confesses that he would run back to her if only he was brave enough.

Therapy? – If It Kills Me Lyrics 16 years ago
To me it sounds like the protagonist of the song is this kind of bad guy, but he genuinly (or at least he says so) is in love with this girl and he wants to prove it to her, that's why he says he wants to hang her name up upon a star. He says that even though he has a twisted side, there's more to him and he wants to show her, whatever it takes (hence the "if it kills me" part).

Dropkick Murphys – Forever Lyrics 16 years ago
It's a great song about love. Every line of the song is meaningful and describes how much one person can mean in your life. I love how they sing that even though all their dreams may fade away, they'll be okay as long as they can be with the other person tonight.

Having been in a 8000 mile long distance relationship, I can pretty much agree with everyone on the power of the line 'I need you so much closer'. Says it all...

The Dø – On My Shoulders Lyrics 16 years ago
I love this song. I would interpret it as being a song about two friends. The girl does everything for the guy and secretly loves him, but he doesn't seem to realize it.

Why would I carry such a weight on my shoulders?
Why do I always help you carry your boulders?
You wonder why I carry such a weight on my shoulders
And why would I tttts such a load
- Here she's asking herself (or other people are asking) why she always helps the guy out. Why she's always there to listen to his problems, even though they're not in a relationship.

Why would you try to make me friends with them soldiers
when you know that I've never been familiar with orders
When you know that my heart is in a pretty disorder
And you should know that in my heart you fill every corner
- This could be about the guy trying to introduce her to other guys (referred to here as soldiers). She's not interested in other guys though and she thinks he should know that he's the one in her heart.

How long will I sit and wait like a soldier?
How many summers will it take?
How many summers will I wait?
How many shoulders will I break?
- She's asking herself how long she still has to wait and how much hurt and disappointment she still has to go through.

Why would I have to quit if time makes me older
Why do they wonder why I never get bored?
And how could I tell them that I'll never let go
But hey, you're my man and they just won't understand
- People are telling her she has to get over him and find someone else, but she doesn't want that. She'll never give up on them being together.

I think it fits well with the entire song, but that's just my view on it of course...

Metallica – For Whom The Bell Tolls Lyrics 16 years ago
This is my favourite Metallica song. I read the Ernest Hemmingway novel a long time ago, and it's nice to see how two different forms of 'art' (literature and music) can influence each other to make a metal masterpiece.

The line 'on they fight, for they're right, yes, but who's to say?' says it all about the stupidity of war. Both sides are convinced that their cause is right and even history can't tell us who in the end was fighting for a just reason, 'cause history is written by the winners.

Foo Fighters – Best Of You Lyrics 16 years ago
I love this song so much. I experienced something similar recently and I listened to this song so much, asking myself if I was born to resist or be abused. If I would stand up to all the shit happening or if I would swallow it, for the sake of not destroying what you have.

I love how he first sings the lines:
I've got another confession to make
I'm your fool
Everyone's got their chains to break
Holding you

This goes well with the line 'I was too weak to resist, too strong to lose'. It's like he's saying that no matter what happened and no matter how much she might have hurt and betrayed him, he's still her fool and still loves her so much, that's why he finds it so hard to break the chains tying them together. He's too weak to resist her and he feels his love is too strong to lose her.

And then at the end the line changes to:
I've got another confession my friend
I'm no fool
I'm getting tired of starting again
Somewhere new

Here he confesses that it might not be his love for her that makes him want to stay with her. It's because he's afraid to end things, to have to start over again with someone else. I think this is a feeling shared by alot of people who had a long term relationship. If you have alot of history behind you, then it's so much harder to give that up and have to start all over with someone else.

Anyway, such a great song!

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds – The Ship Song Lyrics 16 years ago
I enjoyed reading the different views on the song. I think the beauty of it is that everyone can relate to it in a certain way. To me it sounds so much like the thing I went through with my ex. I loved her (and still do) so much, but she cheated on me. And I don't even think she intented to do it, but more because she felt afraid in our relationship and not ready to commit yet. So anyway, I can really relate to the different lines of the song in this way.

Come sail your ships around me
And burn your bridges down
We make a little history, baby
Every time you come around
- This is saying that she should come to me, sail her ships around me and burn the bridges after her. Choosing for someone and don't look back. 'Cause we're great when we are together, making history.

Come loose your dogs upon me
And let your hair hang down
You are a little mystery to me
Every time you come around
- This could be interpreted as hurting someone (loose their dogs upon you) and giving up on a relationship (letting the hair/head hang down). The coming around here can mean changing their feelings towards you instead of the physical interpretation of coming over. This also adds to the mystery part, since it is a mystery why they can change the feelings they have for you.

We talk about it all night long
We define our moral ground
But when I crawl into your arms
Everything comes tumbling down
- This I can relate to very much. I always said I would never let anyone cheat on me. That was like a moral ground for me. But when you are in the arms of the person you love, all those feelings of anger, hurt, and betrayal make way for the love you feel and you forgive them everything just to be able to stay in those arms.

Your face has fallen sad now
For you know the time is nigh
When I must remove your wings
And you, you must try to fly
- She is sad because she knows that what has happened is wrong and that she can't go on like this. She has to choose what she wants. And when she chooses for a relationship that means having her wings clipped in a certain way. So she must try to find the freedom she needs but without the wings, without the absolute freedom of doing whatever she wants, without thinking about anyone else.

So in short I think it's about the two sides of a relationship: the verses with the ship part being the good moments and the verses with the dog part being the bad ones. But if you want the relationship to succeed you have to get past those bad moments and accept giving up certain things in return for others.
