Dude, you are absolutely correct, the song means nothing at all. You have a fair lyricist in Plant who did not like the song at all, who was pressured to write lyrics, which he did very quickly, and quite a few of the lines came from stuff he had been reading at the time. I think he may have intentionally written the lyrics to be ridiculous as he really hated the song. Still, it's fascinating, I can't think of any other song that so many people are so passionate about trying to find the meaning of... well, except maybe Louie, Louie, that one had the FBI going nuts for about half the sixties. |

It was Plant who hates this song. I saw him in an interview a while back. Page and Jones had this song and Page wanted Plant to come down and put some lyrics to it. He wasn't really into the song and around that time had been reading English mythology about druids and such. Anyway, pressured by Page he wrote the lyrics very quickly, and in his own words said the lyrics mean absolutely nothing. The first time they performed it live it bombed big time, they were booed by the audience and Plant turned to Page and said, "See, I told you". Who knew. I have somewhat blurry memories from the seventies of sitting around for hours discussing the meaning of the lyrics. Seems kind of silly now. Still ones of the greats, thou. |

I agree with the other comments... Dr. D you may be right... Does anyone know what's behind the second verse? |

Used to think this was a U2 original until I discovered Patti's. Both are amazing. Used to think Bono was saying heroin, until I heard the original, heroine makes more sense. Definitely not about heroin, "makes me come on like some heroine".
Thanks, Prisoner for clearing that up. Still, I can see how some would make the connection, it was recorded close to the same period as Bad, and Running to Stand Still which are about heroin and hopelessness |
