| AFI – Endlessly, She Said Lyrics | 16 years ago |

Selkis 13 has hit the nail on the head with this one. That seems to be EXACTLY what it's about. If i read over it now I can't think of any other possible explanation. the person saying "i will wait for you" is of course misery itself, hece the "so spoke misery" and the "you will outlast my love" means that misery will always be there waiting for him. even after his love, because finally that will come to an end. it is also misery speaking the lyric "I have come to relieve you Of life and love" |

although i've just read this that somebody else has put on the editors cut thread and it also makes a lot of sense. "This song is about God and how the human race thinks he abandonded us because we pray and they go unanswered. God promised the human race that when we die will go to heaven and our sins will be forgivin and blah blah blah. What's the hook, the twist within this verbose mystery? I would gladly bet my life upon it. That the ghost you love, your ray of light Will fizzle out without hope. (hope) We're the empty set just floating through, wrapped in skin, Ever searching for what we were promised. Reaching for that golden ring we'd never let go, Who would ever let us put their filthy hands upon it? This part of the song was the dead give away for me. Basically saying whats the catch to get into heaven the golden ring being the halos." but then again i think there's more to it than God. I reckon the Jesus thing is a metaphor for fame. |

nahhh. i doubt this is about Jesus. If we are to take the song meaning in an entirely literal context and assume that the 'narrator' is Davey Havok himself, i get this meaning from it: basically, he's a rock star. everybody adores him. he has millions of women (and men) swooning over him every day. he is seen as iconic. "oh how they all adored him" and : "With just a look they shook And heavens bowed before him Simply a look can break your heart" this, to me seems to be about the idolisation of a famous person, so i can see where people are getting the whole Jesus idea from but i think there's more to it than that. ANYWAY... The Man, whether it is Davey or not, (i see the person to be a celebrity), is afraid of growing old and losing his looks. the thing his success thrives on will be gone and he feels he will no longer be admired. In order to retain his beauty and the status in peoples' minds he wishes to end his own life. so people will see him as beautiful forever. his beauty will be made permanent by his death. "Hey Miss Murder can I Make beauty stay if I Take my life?" that part seems to be quite obvious to me. It's funny how people have different interpretations of songs. nobody is WRONG. it's just that this is what the song is about, for me. Oh and the Miss Murder he is referring to is some imaginary being that he is posing the matter of his death to. the person ho controls life and death, hence the name Miss Murder. A God-like creature, if you will. This part, however, has me stumped: "What's the hook, the twist, within this verbose mystery? I would gladly bet my life upon it That the ghost you love, your ray of light will fizzle out Without hope We're the empty set, just flowing through, wrapped in skin Ever-searching for what we were promised Reaching for that golden ring we'd never let go But who would ever let us put our filthy hands upon it?" does the golden ring symbolise eternal beauty? meh. i dunno. |

i think this song is pretty straightforward. it's about burial. the 'what follows' bit confuses me though. the obvious interpretation would be that the narrator is asking 'what follows?'. i.e- what comes after death? but for some reason, i know i'm probably wrong but i get an image in my head on him being chased into this forest by something unseen. 'what follows will swallow whole'. that doesn't really make any sense but it's the image the song puts in my head anyway. but yeah, still 100% about burial. the insects, the sinking ground. without a doubt. |

it's really interesting to read all this about the Phoenix Theatre. It's definitely helped me to understand the song. at first i thought the first verse was about a funeral. candles, flowers, velvet lining to a coffin. how wrong i was! that's awesome though. you know, sometimes people just try to look too deeply into something, looking for meanings that aren't there. sometimes you're just got to take things at face value. :) |

I don't really have much to say on this one. i just reckon it's how people indulge in their own misery, sharing it with others (the dancing partner) as a way to impress them. "swooning i am swept away" AFI seem to be infatuated with the macabre and so delighting in misery doesn't seem like such an odd conclusion to make. i get the whole 'delight' aspect from the fact that they are dancing. something commonly associated with happiness. also a way to win somebody's heart. that's how i see the song. |

right. sorry to interrupt your argument here folks but i just wanted to put my opinion on the song's meaning. you know, what this website is for. not slagging off emos. (on a side not AFI are not remotely emo. they are strongly influenced by punk rock and could be described as more 'gothic' than 'emo'. they don't whinge about emotions - they create hypothetical storylines within the narrative of their songs, and often write from a third person perspective. anyway. I reckon this song is about being in purgatory. the man in the song is dead and is recollecting everything he can remember about his life in order to find out what his mistakes were and how he can rectify them in order to be recreated: "I do implore these confines, now, as they penetrate, "recreate me" I'm hovering throughout time, I crumble in these days I crumble, I cannot, I cannot find reflection in these days" he cannot find an answer as to why he is in this horrible place. his life as a mortal being was so long ago it is almost forgotten. he can faintly hear the distant sound of his once living heart drumming out its final beats. he wants to keep hold of any memories of his human life and so he kept the pieces of his heart (metaphorically of course), but when he found that he has no use for it in purgatory, he ground the pieces up. well. that's what i think anyway. it's open to interpretation. |

the religious connotations in this song are unavoidable. i'm not religious myself or one of those people who looks for religious meaning in songs but as i said, there's no denying it - it's there. "Just give me your hand and I'll let you feel the wounds they put in me." - this appears to be referencing Jesus' stigmata. HOWEVER, this does not mean that the song is necessarily ABOUT Jesus or God. In my opinion this is a song about a man who has fallen for a mysterious woman and wants to know more about her. he is pleading with her to 'bring your secrets to me'. and 'press me to your lips and i'll suck the poison out'. Meaning, tell me your secrets and i'll try to ease any pain and suffering. The whole Jesus aspect is to gain the woman's trust. he compares himself to the son of God in order to secure his status within the woman's mind. I believe this is a one way relationship. more of a fascination than a boyfriend/girlfriend thing as he says: "If you keep killing me how can I keep absolving? Your sins into me, begin the poisoning" I take this to mean that although he is asking for her to lose the mystery enshrouding her, she is refusing to, thus 'killing him'. he wants to absolve her sins, just like in Silver and Cold, and is more than ready for her to 'begin the poisoning'. he'd be willing to take her poison/pain in exchange for a few secrets. that's how i see it anyway. let me know if anyone agrees x |

| AFI – ...But Home Is Nowhere Lyrics | 16 years ago |

I can't even begin to try to decipher this song. the poem in particular is the most beautiful thing i have ever heard and perhaps that is how we should keep it, as an art form. I just love the way the words make me feel and the emotions they evoke. the combination of beauty and tragedy is breathtaking. the poem leaves an indelible image in my mind, one that i could never put into words. a poem has never touched me the way this one does. it's just so... perfect. What an interesting imagination this man has. it's just fascinating. |
