First! Sounds to me like an Oregon trail type journey. I get the feeling of harsh survival of some sort. |

| Clutch – Bottoms Up, Socrates Lyrics | 15 years ago |

I don't think that the "hanging on the words of a madman" line specifically refers to the pope, or god or anything religious. Socrates died because he challenged the status quo. His trial was mainly political seeing as he challenged the way Athens was run. If you look at the next few lines "No use for the poet, when the hopeless seek no bliss", this is written from his perspective. It's mainly just about trying to help people that don't want to be helped. That's why I think the line "Islands in the abyss" is how they need help but don't know that they do. |

It's not retelling any Biblical stories from what I can gather, but there is a strong Christianity theme to it. There is an interview with Neil somewhere on youtube, where he is talking on a bus and he describes how he uses names and certain things as a literary device, basically. I went deep down into that river now. I rose up. I felt that sun beat down upon this sinner's face. I went deep in that water now. I rose up. I felt that sun beat down upon my face This is obviously a baptism. I shouldn't really even have to explain it. Bedlam was a hospital for the insane a long time ago. And the story of Samson in the bible, God gave him the strength to conquer his enemies. Basically I think the song is about overcoming obstacles through your own beliefs, whatever those may be, as to kind of say "Everything's gonna be alright". |

yes fozzymandias I don't think people take the time out of their day to look at the dollar enough to know it has the eye and the pyramid which both have ties to Freemasonry |

| Clutch – Army of Bono Lyrics | 16 years ago |

Is it just me or is this NOT meant as an insult to Bono. Bono is known for his activism, right? I feel like he is saying he wants us to be an army of Bono's for what the song is about. But I could be wrong. |

Wow, I really started thinking about this song recently. It's not so much what the story of the song is about, posted from the website, but the overall theme has come up in Clutch songs so often and it's what I identify with the most in their music. From Electric Worry "Doctor or Lawyer I'll never be The life of a drifter The only life for me" I really do feel out of place in fancier settings, like I don't belong with the crowd, not that I don't deserve nice things every once in a while, but the whole common man thing just really clicks for me. |

| Clutch – Spacegrass Lyrics | 16 years ago |

This song is so awesome I started yelling when I first heard it. I see this song about being a mixture of journeys. I don't any interpretation of it is wrong. M83 is a spiral galaxy and highway in Michigan. Galaxy 500 is a song by Reverend Horton Heat, and in his song he mentions 1973 also. I think it has multiple meanings, referencing the Galaxie 500 (car), music and being on the road, space themes all together to form an image of being alone driving (high), like flying. I think the "Jesus on the dashboard" part is using the driving theme, but saying its just a reminder of religion. "Hit neutral in the tail of a comet. Let the vortex pull my weight." Drafting? Hehe. That's all I have right now. |

Aaron Turner said something about Wavering Radiant being about dreams. One of the themes I see reoccurring in the lyrics for Wavering Radiant, which by the way, you can read more here: is sleeping, but I don't think lucid dreaming is the main focus, even though it is mentioned, and may have something to do with the concept. What I did find was something called dreamtime, which was an idea by the Aborigines, that a separate but parallel stream of events that occur during our dreams influence the way they lived, their rules and other important aspects of life. It's believe that dreamtime is more real than real life. This part jumps out at me and seems to be similar to the dreamtime theme. "embodied by a boy His voice small and weak wisp of smoke to be chosen All by their heads he places crowns to witness entire towns The boy blesses whispers into words in the painted valleys they await rain " "embodied by a boy" I think means that this person is just a humble person this story is describing, and not someone really in any prominent position. "all by their heads he places crowns" The meager 'boy', has given 'power' to someone that didn't have any in the first place. "The boy blesses whispers into words in the valley they await rain" I think this part means goes with the part where he gives power, but he is acting as an intermediate or an interpreter ("whispers into words", the 'into words' part, he is dictating it as some kind of stated law) between the dreamtime and real life. The people looking to him 'await rain', or just wait for something he has said will happen that he has no control over (rain), but it could just be an allegory for anything that is out of their hands, that they expect or are in need of. |
