this song is about Kristen Pfaff. "she's the angel on top of the tree" is about how everyone loved Kristen because she was sweet and beautiful, like an angel. "sugar heart here she comes she's going to fall one me" how Kristen got lost and was going to die because of her addiction. "Innocence was our fire, we told the truth" Courtney and Kristen were friends and Kristen took pride in being honest and understanding. "I miss the sweet boys in the summer of their youth" during Hole's 1993 summer tour they toured with cute guy bands like the Lemonheads and Courtney and Kristen got along well and everyone was happy. "tear the petals off of you, make you tell the truth" is how drug dealers tore away Kristen's life and turned her into a sad addict. "they will make you so, so cynical" is how the dealers and the harsh world would turn Kristen bad and cynical. "the fire burns the flesh" you have to melt heroin with fire, "destroy the past that made us old" Courtney tried to fall into the abyss of drugs to make herself forget her past (Kurt and Kristen dying) that made her grow up and get mature. "she's the grace of this world" Kristen was the grace of the world "she's too pure, for the likes of this world" the world of drugs addicts and depression, "this world is a whore" the bad world is a whore, always wanting more beautiful souls to destroy. "ahhh its all mine" Courtney's saying the blame is hers, its all her fault that Kristen died. "I never knew what I could be" Courtney's speaking in Kristen's point of view, saying no one ever knew what Kristen could accomplish cuz she died too young. "all the darling buds of may fall with no sound" all the beautiful people die but no one cares because they're just junkies. "they carry you down" drug dealers pushed her down. "all the lilies bloomed and blossomed" Kristen's talent finally showed and she blossomed "wilted and they're shivering" Kristen slowly became addicted, "I can't stop their withering" Courtney couldn't stop Kristen cuz she, too, was addicted "this world is a war" the world of music and grunge is full of sadness and death. the classical music played at the end is because its like music for a funeral. also, I think the bassline and backup vocals are purposely intricate and beautiful, because those were the roles Kristen served in the band. also Hole never performed this song live, I think because Courtney never really addressed Kristen's death and this would be too hard for Courtney to do |

this song is about her step dad and her mom's relationship. her stepdad was a garbage man. in the end of their relationship he left and so the lyrics "hey where the fuck were you?!" make sense |
