Although it is very obvious this is a song of love, and in fact Daniel said he had written it in honour of his wife, I cannot avoid interpreting it a little differently... Whenever I hear this song I think of it as a song being sung by the Blessed Virgin with the Child Jesus in her arms, almost like a lullaby: can you picture it? The Lady in her little house -built by the good Joseph himself, who knows-, the golden sun entering through the windows, the Child perfectly satisfied sleeping in His mother's arms, all the house silent -we don't want to wake the little one up- but it is a silence full of life, radiant, strong, beautiful, and true. And she watches Him silently, and then she sings... ...for that Child is Beauty Himself, Reason Himself -the Logos of God-, the Eternal One... His face is truly the face of God. She saw that Face every day, growing older and wiser "before God and men" (cf. Lc II:52), but only to her He was her little Child: "I will hold you when you cry... I will love you till I die". And you and me, both hidden behind the door, would like to shout the same promise... and we tell him, very quietly -we don't want to wake Him up-: "I, too, will love you till I die". |
