this is about elliott criticizing himself for never facing himself, making himself change to be a better person. instead he tries to take advantage of ppl, buries it in other ppl, tries to seek attention from audience. essentially it is about selfishness. taking the easy way out could of course be a euphemism for suicide--if not the direct action more so a patter of self destructive behavior as i have mentioned earlier, still ending in a deprecated view of himself. like any piece of literature we convey our meaning onto and from it--hence its universal and relatable qualities. however, for as much as elliott got a lot of things, he missed so much as well. rip man. |

this song can be interpreted into many different meanings--relationships, drugs, and depression being prominent metaphorical themes elliott used to convey his feelings. i feel that this is pretty straight forward however, the song is titled happiness somewhat ironically almost as if it is belittling an emotional state people strive to achieve and maintain if only for a little while, i think he is suggesting its essentially not worth it, just like selling out "made his life a lie, so you know (about him) striving for happiness is the same. but as elliott mentions in the ending we are essentially trapped by wanting to achieve this state of being whether we want to or not, perhaps in reference to junk bond trader about the cop standing out in the road "policeman directing traffic keeping everything moving everything static" you strive for control but all you can do is want to remain indifferent in the calm quiet of the inbetween as he says. having said that, i think this idea primarily imbued through the two unnamed characters in the song both strive to find happiness in something else and ultimately fail. additionally, it is somewhat of a ironic fall as both people attempt to become beautiful in someway or another to the other person (as i mentioned earlier, made his life a lie..and because he did you find out about him likewise for the girl). another interpretation is that trying to forget each other they attempt to form into something else to forget about eachother (which the song also supports connotativly). their duel realization that happiness ultimately was the selflessness between the two who cared for each other only occurs after their relationship is over "all i want now is happiness for you and me". |
