Well, this song has a lot of meaning for me, because a few of my friends would call me "morena," because I have very dark hair. The other reason I love the song is because I am a ballet dancer, and I used to, and still do at times, dance in the rain sometimes at night in the garden when no one's looking. The stars and the garden lights are phenomenal...and the smell of the flowers! Ahhhh But...to be specific about the term morena: it can be used for a few meanings actually. One certainly means "dark" as in anything like skin, hair, eyes, etc. But...the other is more of a mystical meaning and is used in Mexico when referring to the Virgin Mary. (La Virgen Morena) (The Dark Virgin) There is a large feast of food and dancing surrounding La Virgen Morena. I feel that in this song in particular, especially because of the words, "Take this cross of feathers and bone..." that the word "morena" is playing off of this mystical meaning and that it is therefore being used as an idiomatic expresion, meaning, "my virgin." |
