I always thought this song was about a couple of friends that sort of switched lovers somewhere along the line, whether due to cheating or whatever and the awkwardness of each person wondering what thier signifigant other is thinking about their ex. You would never be able to truly relax and get it back to the way it was before all that happened. |

I think this song hints about something that ended without closure, then he runs into the person 10 years later and hence the line 'Does my memory comfort you while your eyes see me through? Well, it's ten years later and still, I haven't a clue.' It ended abruptly and unexpectantly. There were no words of reassurance which would lead him to believe that she actually cared for him, but just wasn't 'into' him. There were no words of degradation to suggest that she couldn't stand him. Therefore, no closure, leaving him to wonder how his memory affects her, good or bad. He just doesn't know and it saddens him. |

I believe it's a guy who is going through a tough time in his relationship and is wondering if it is just a phase or it is really over. 'Lately, it seems we've been chasing what time's resolved or maybe something means nothing here after all'. In other words, 'time has told us that we simply can't get along and no amount of effort is going to change that or maybe we are just over-reacting and it's not really as bad as we think'. |

This song is obviously about someone, in this case a girl/woman, who is just stumbling through life with no purpose or goal. They have no real cares so, will always have a perfect day...at everyone else's expense. I know a million people like this song describes and the rate is accelerating. |

This song simply speaks about how someone deals with misinterpretation and how others don't understand them completely, then finding that one person that understands exactly what you were saying. In other words, an intellectual, logical mind not bogged down by media, religion, drugs, and all the other modern hype finally colliding with another like-minded individual and cherishing it for how rare it actually is. |

When he says 'caught a bolt of lightning...cursed the day he let it go', he knows keeping hold of this 'bolt of lightning' will be painful and hard, so he just lets it go, then later, looking back, wishes he would have kept hold of it, because he realizes that it would have been worth it. |

I got through some of these comments and I haven't seen any that reflect the true meaning. Most are very close, however, a lot of people seem to have the notion that this has something to do with an artist because of the mention of the canvas and clay. You are taken those lyrics literal, and Eddie Vedder rarely comes right out and just says it in easy to comprehend lyrics, which is what makes him such a phenomenal lyricist.
The first verse should not be taken literal, but it is a metaphor. "Sheets of empty canvas, untouched sheets of clay lay spread out before me as her body once did" This has nothing to do with him being an artist, but simply a metaphor to describe all the things left undone, such as all the 'pictures left unpainted and all the clay left unshaped' In other words, all he can think about is what might have been. What 'masterpieces' they could have created together. This is also reflected in the second verse when he sees the kids playing and knows that he should be happy in seeing it, but somehow isn't, because all he can do is dwell on what might have been (or in his eyes, SHOULD have been).
The song is about one thing simply. What he feels to be the ultimate betrayal. He placed everything in this one person and they turned on him, seemingly overnight, thus the reference to how quick the sun can drop away. No warning, just over.
