Project 86 – My Will Be A Dead Man Lyrics 16 years ago
This is my thoughts behind the meaning of this song...all of the above posted fit in in some ways...but it seems that what I see as the most important meaning of the song, hence the name, has been overlooked by some.

Its a story of a fight against ones own self...against your "flesh"...set to the backdrop of an old west gunfight

My Will Be A Deadman

High noon cometh, not a moment too soon (highnoon..the usual set time for a quickdraw showdown between enemies in the old west)

There's gonna be a firefight tonight
A reckoning to confront the residents of this tomb
A gunpowder party and it feels just right (He's refering to the skeletons we all have...the hidden thoughts and desires and sins we sometimes cling to...a battle against our ownselves...our flesh..the source of biggest temptation we all face)

There comes a time
There comes a day
There comes an hour when...

In every man's life
In every man's life
When he must...
Brandish his steel
Mount up his steed(This is talking about the fact, that for all of us, regardless of what it is we do in life...to some extent or another...we have decisions to make....important ones in a wide variety of aspects. There comes a time in every persons life where it becomes crunch time... "brandish his steel, mount up his steed"...meaning, we must take action, we have no choice but to take action, here referred to as arming yourself with a weapon, in this case a six shooter, and mounting your horse to ride to face the battle....)

In every man's life
In every man's life
My will be a dead man(and when fighting this battle...making these decisions, whether small and seemingly incignificant or big...that "my will be a deadman"...do not let it be MY desires, My thoughts, MY choices that direct my life...but God's will instead. I know you've all heard the phrase, "Gods will be done" God has a plan for all of us. Its up to us to deny our flesh and follow it instead of our own on a daily, even hourly basis. In every descision...especially big ones..."not my will, God, but yours.")

All is quiet in the dusty alleyways
Few men dare to penetrate this land
And live to tell this terrible tale
My trusty six shot, my own right hand (again carrying on with the Old West theme...usually in a gunfight at high noon in the movies....no one was out and about at this time..they were all hiding out of sight, some peeking from their hiding spots to see who won...and it seems it was always windy..blowing dust and tumbleweeds all around. And so it is often times with the our battle with ourselves...our "free" will...too often its quiet all around...not a soul to be seen except the "thing" we're here to do battle with. Teachings and advice from friends are often overpowered and pushed aside as the flesh tempts us to give in...and only those who strive to remember the teachings of and seek the will of God will overcome this battle of the flesh "few men dare to penetrate this land and live to tell this terrible tale"...as for the "My trusty sixshot, My own right hand" going back into the chorus of the descisions to be made/a time to take action...he's referring to the temptation to rely on yourself instead of God, a temptation to cast aside faith...in the old west...gunfighters lived by their guns, and of course, their drawing hand...and thats what he's saying..."I'm in this battle where most men don't make it, I can trust God and follow his will...but then again, I have my trusty sixshot and my quick hand right here...maybe I can handle this myself...." and then back into the chorus of defeating your own flesh and surrending your life wholely to God's will.

I'm not talking 'bout killing a man
I'm not referring to dirt, this land
There's no showdown here besides the one
That's erupting inside my head (just the simple fact that this story and the scene described isn't a real "gunfight" with an actual person...just a metaphor for the battle we all face against the flesh...against our free will.)
