I like your interpretation for the most part. The mask line I read a little differently. "I would react but then my mask would slip and you'd see me. I hate him, you love me." I see these as the same idea, not separate. If he would react he would be taking off the mask and she would see him for who he really is. He hates the person he has tried to conceal, but he knows that "she loves me"... She doesn't love the real him because he has never taken off the mask to let her see. Therefore the relationship is doomed regardless. There is a hopelessness in these lines, because he loves her, but his unwillingness to be vulnerable with her means she doesn't know the real him and in his unwillingness to be vulnerable the relationship is failing regardless |

I think it's obvious that the song is about someone who died... "it should have been me", and "strong as you were in the end" Possibly a connection to Rose of Sharyn? |
