...or maybe the urge to abuse others is itself the prison, and the abuser feels trapped by it. I'm sure Maynard would agree with either interpretation. |

It's not about "being butt-raped in prison." It's about being molested as a child, then becoming a molester oneself. "Prison Sex" is just a device to describe the feeling of molested/molester. Choice is gone, your sex (or sexual deviancy) is your prison. |

Actually, this song was released in 1993, but was written before then. They were playing "Sober," for example, in concert back in 1990. |

Actually, Maynard said in an interview that the "stranglehold" part was improvised in the studio. Then again, he's notoriously full of shit. |

It's actually a traditional gypsy song. Don't know the title or anything, but Adam Jones talked about it in an interview I read like 15 years ago; I had always wondered the same thing so I never forgot what he said. |

This song is about being in prison. Period. You may have a personal interpretation that means something to you, and that's great, and I'm sure Ian Mackaye would have no problem with anyone having their own emotional (meaning, pertaining to emotions, not fucking "emo") viewpoint on it, but plain and simple, it's about being in prison. Feeling like you are outside the of society ("everybody's moving, everybody's moving...please don't leave me to remain," "I don't want the news, cause I don't wanna know," "sitting outside of town, everybody's always down"), and waiting to get back to it, hopefully not winding up there again ("and I won't make the same mistakes cause I know, I know how much time that wastes"). It's totally obvious if you look at the lyrics again.
By the way, I have never heard a more useless term than "emo." All genres are bullshit, generally, but that one is especially meaningless. All "emo" means is shitty, whiny, trust fund rock, which this definitely isn't. Is there any band, anywhere, that actually refers to themselves as emo? Didn't think so. |

The albatross line is a reference to Coleridge's "The Rime Of The Ancient Mariner." The idiomatic expression also arose from this poem. In the poem, most of which takes place on a ship at sea, the ship is followed by an albatross, a large seabird. The albatross is held to be good luck by sailors. The ancient mariner kills it, and the rest of the crew turns on him when their luck runs foul. He is forced to wear it around his neck in retribution. There you have it, in a nutshell. |
