wow man youre the the only guy on the whole site who gets this song! I just looked thru every comment because if someone hadn't understood it I would have had to type all that stuff up haha. The narrator is talking about alien tourists examining us, and the whole scenario where he gets abducted starts with "i wish" and the next stanza describing how nobody would take him seriously is all in the hypothetical tense "i'd (i would) tell all my friends but they'd (they would) never believe me" etc. It's a beautiful story, and it really speaks to me. But the song is not about that actually happening, it's just Thom Yorke imagining himself being abducted by aliens and then feeling alienated when no one believes that he was really abducted and no one can see the world as he sees - more enlightened, free to be himself. The two posts after yours are also pretty good. |

The meaning of this song isn't disputable, but the meaning of those first two lines, for me, is a little different. 'You knew in five minutes But I knew in a sentence' Obviously its referring to the fact that women decide whether they want to sleep with a man within five minutes of meeting him, but in this case it isn't the first time they've met. When you meet up with, whether by chance or not, someone you've previously dated, it's typically obvious IMMEDIATELY if you and her are going to have another fling. This is not normally a good idea (like a moth flying into the light), since the relationship didn't work out for whatever reason the first time, but moths are attracted to light nevertheless; as are we to our previous lovers. |

Got some boys who were upset, They were headed out to India Point Got two in the bucket backseat of the Pinto said You could lose your mind for all your mind is worth. One got up on a soapbox and proceeded to take his point Said, What god's are you to take this, And turn to blood? 'Cause the revolutionaries on the rooftop Climb down to the cemeteries Where the missionary line up For the mercy of the military's time Treat bodies like the bullet ridden clothes on the clothesline 'Cause the prey's hunting a hunter in his own blind And it won't be the last time We use them eyes to see Them all hanging I believe I can make you whole See them all go back again And I dont think youll ever know How it goes and what it runs down To the place we often bled 'Cause it's a manifest destiny Like a genocide recipe Telling the knowledge That rests in me to fear my own race Challenge your good Another thick of your callous Don't underestimate the fate of preordained malice Where are my boots And where the hell is your balance The hell, you did Come down from your palace To see us all Reaching up To see us all Reaching up 'Cause the revolutionaries on the rooftop Climb down to the cemeteries Where the missionaries line up For the mercy of the military sign Treat bodies like the bullet ridden clothes on the clothesline 'Cause the prey's hunting a hunter in his own blind And it won't be the last time We use them eyes to see Them all hanging I believe I can make you whole See them all go back again And I dont think well ever know How it goes or what it runs down To the place Cause Im slowly turning in Dont you have to go? Dont you have to go? Dont you have to go, child? Dont you have to go? Take them to your cousins land Sweet Madeleine has got her hand And she's asking the last man to fall Don't fall When I'm listening Holy water Go ask your friend And may your fever? be gone When I'm listening Holy Lama Go ask your friend And may your freedom be gone |

The 6/8 time races this thru. Amazing flow for a song that comes across as a ballad. Almost like a major key, more wandering version of i am mine. This new album is the shit. The lyrics are so great in every song. I'm still figuring this one out, but like almost any vedder lyrics they seem to have multiple meanings, the literal giving way to metaphors hidden just beneath, with even deeper broad themes tying it all together. beautiful |

| Guys he wrote it about his truck but every great songwriter can apply the personal story to a broader theme and thats what makes it a great song. the fact that eddie related his truck quitting on him to relationship abuse sparked a needless arguement haha HE DOES THIS SHIT ON PURPOSE. ed's a genius, admit it. And yes he does bullshit the media about songs quite often | |

wow two pages of comments and no one quite gets it. im not sure i do but im going to take a stab. oh tonight began with anything, shaft of light, a warm breath and a scream, These first two line are about birth. when someone is born they see a shaft of light...then they begin breathing and normally cry right then and there. oh tamper if you like between the doors oh cant expect to go out, to go out with anything more Tamper if you like basically means you can do what you want with your life between birth and death, but you cant 'go out with anything more' than you came in with - none of your possessions follow your soul after death. The chorus kind of speaks for itself - continuing on the theme of birth. beautifully written i might add all these reaching hands out grabbing things, grabbing me day in day out accumulating The reaching hands grabbing things and grabbing me line is not only the experience one goes thru as an infant - everyone wants the opportunity to hold you for a moment - but also it shows the new baby subconsciously noticing that everyone is 'grabbing things' like their possessions. Children learn to want becuz its what they see every day - adults obsessing over material things. the baby is accumulating knowledge day in and day out. but also this could be referring again to material possessions accumulated over a life. this is when eddie offers his two cents on these 'things': whoa i suggest you step on your porch run away my son, see it all, oh see the world Eddie chimes in to give his advice - as soon as you are old enough, see the world. experience every new experience you can, they will help you much more than possessions. come, here it comes, there it goes, when it comes where it goes, when it comes cant see through the faith, whoh ooh come, here it comes, there it goes grab what you can dont you know theres something inside your head, yeah, The bridge is very well-written and makes perfect sense. Just read and interpret. life and lifes experience go by quickly. grab what you can - which is knowledge and experience and a few possessions. grab what you can while living life to the fullest; dont live to accumulate, live to learn. |
