i get the pretentious feeling from this whole song as well, especially at the party, where she seems to laugh in such a perfect, cordial manner. the part that's stumping me is all the mention of food as clothing. a smoking jacket "made of bow and arrow meat", "sashimi (tuna) dress" and "collard greens"? also, what does she mean by riot gear? does she mean things one would wear to a riot, or is this some kind of fancy outfit i haven't heard of? :P |

this song gives off a really strong feeling of harsh criticism of society and religion. by saying "I don't wanna live without you", and that "death from above is still a death", she's directly defying judeo-christianity. she chooses her secular love over love for a god. she also condemns society as losing its touch with romanticism, instead becoming cynical and sarcastic. the line "What if to each his own lonely grave" hit me the most. we've lost the ability to love beyond life by putting it all into faith in a higher power. i also love that this song really sounds "russian" if that makes any sense with the "hey!"'s thrown in with the tambourine shake. |

i'm not crazy about the guitar accompaniment in the album version of the song, but i love it nonetheless, and i absolutely ADORE this song. i think the first stanza is critical because it sets the tone for the rest of the song. the speaker has obviously been broken and stepped upon by someone, but then she goes on to say how leaves become most beautiful when they're about to fall, and how we're waiting for our lovers to unlock. for me, i think the song is trying to capture that very brief moment in time when we're completely happy. we wait and wait, and while waiting nothing can make us happy (why am I supposed to love when I don't want to love?), until we've changed enough to see our true love. and then it's all over. |

| Regina Spektor – One More Time with Feeling Lyrics | 16 years ago |

yeah i'm really disappointed with how the album over-produced it, and made it seem more upbeat. it takes away from the edge of the chorus. "Hold on one more time with feeling" seems like a cry of desperation from the speaker's POV, and i get the sense it's an internal thought. the "this is why we fight" probably refers to the people around the speaker, but i'm still a little fuzzy. i get a strong sense of death, and fighting to say alive, which fits nicely with the hospital images. |

| Regina Spektor – Two Birds Lyrics | 16 years ago |
| i really have to disagree with people saying this song is necessarily about romantic relationships. it seems much broader in that it refers to one person being held back by another. the one who wants to move on doesn't feel resentful of the other, though, as seen in the lines "I'll believe it all/there's nothing I won't understand/I'll believe it all/I won't let go of your hand". the two birds have been friends sitting on that wire for so long that the one trying to fly away is willing to believe that eventually his friend will come around and fly off as well. it almost strikes me as naivete... | |
