Recently rediscovered this gem after growing up in the 80s. Billy is way underrated. My take on this, my fave song of his: it's about the dual nature in all of us, the light side that we try to present versus the dark. There's a dark side that we all have, but we try to keep it in the dark. |

It's definitely "pantry," and I can't believe I'm listening to this song 30 years later. It has held up well, especially if you enjoy fits of laughter with your listening. The intro and outro are kinda epic. |

Harsh, even for Tom, but sugarcoated with fantastic synths, "I knew you once... when you were young... before you knew what you'd become." If you're middle-age or not exactly where you planned to be, it's a sweet wake-up call (Tom really isn't a total dick). |

It's about the most straightforward White Lies song ever: a one-night stand that left him cold and empty. At least they he stayed the night (even though it left him weak and empty).and waited for the morning shower.
Brilliant song about the experience! |

@hippydippy: I think you're exactly right about the surface meaning of the tale in this song. But welcome to the world of lyrical analysis of Placebo--the meaning can go so many ways.
Where ever you want to take it, really, which is one of the many reasons I love Placebo. I love Iron Maiden as well, but there's rarely room for interpretation there. |

To me this song is about codependent alcoholics and what it means to be one of them. The "kings of medicine" are physicians--the medical community has long acknowledged that they are powerless to do anything to "cure" alcoholism. All he's left with as a solution is the "hour"--the length of an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting.
Such a great, powerful song--my current favorite on a near-masterpiece of an album from a long-time favorite band.
