i think theres two ways to look at this song: 1 a world view or 2 a relationship i think this is about how so often in life there is so much of it that we're not in control of.we're simply at the mercy of an indifferent universe(or god if youre religous).life is always going to hurt people but brandon endorses a view that all mans job is to just try to ''shelter'' yourself from these hardships. the reader that obsesses about that bleak view ends up depressed and lonely avoiding real connection with 'secrets on the pillow'. he then talks about the transient nature of joy, that expecting it to last endlessly is like trying to control the weather even though this is true people must still live: a moving message of defiance in the face of lifes' bad. we will suffer what the world throws at us ''and when the hardest part is over we'll be here and our dreams will break the boundaries of our fears'' following this is a reflection in repetition on how a fear of 'crossfire' can cage the spirit. finally,his admission that he has layed down already. |
