There's 137 comments, and, from a quick skim, no one seems to offer the interpretation of this song as a suicide note/contemplation? "And in the morning, I'll be with you But it will be a different kind 'Cause I'll be holding all the tickets And you'll be owning all the fines" Tickets = leaving on a journey Fines = the person they leave behind has to pay the cost of losing a loved one Suicide seems unfair because the loved ones pay the price when a dear is gone. All throughout the song there's hints of suicide attempts. Like a sink of blood in one verse and, in another verse, cutting the rope to be freed. I also admire the "pour a little salt" line with the sink of blood. Sometimes people inflict pain onto themselves just to feel alive. But all in all, it seems like the person is hesitant to die and wants really bad to find contentment. This is evident in the first line "just last a year" and in the chorus "And I told you to be patient". The chorus definitely reminds me of 1Cor13's "love is patient, love is kind." Cheers :) |

I think this song is making a statement that mistakes happen, and it sucks when it happens. I'm in transit (Bless this mess we tried) Floating stranded on this boat (our best for something we can do) And I pledge myself allegiance (While the angels walk with the lonely ones) To a better night sleep at home (in the cold rain and rescue you) --So in these verses, he talks about finding himself in misfortune and how he is powerless to do anything about it. But it's okay, because he plans to sleep it off at home or be eventually saved by angels, which could be friends or family. And the sweet, sweet sun's comin' down (And the fable's world's coming down) Hard, the sun's comin' down (hard, walls coming down) Hard, it burns the bones (hard, in all our homes) So hold a hand for cover Hold a hand for cover Hold a hand for cover from harm =What used to seem so magnificent, in these cases the sweet sun and the fable's world, is now hitting him where it hurts the most. The sun is burning his bones, and the walls are coming down in all 'our' homes. The sweet sun/fable's world has tricked him and enticed him to let his guard down. Now he's looking for a hand to hold for cover from harm, which seems pointless because the walls are coming down and the sun is coming down hard and the mistake already happened. |

I thought the one-word lines were cool and random, but I gave meaning to them just for fun Relation Creation (When we relate with one another, we create a bond) Incarceration Determination (When we're incarcerated, we're determined to break free) Equation Humiliation Reincarnation (Equation as in equality; humility allows us to treat each other as equal; humility allows us to be broken down and be born again) Situation Elation (When we are more aware of our surroundings, we can be elated with what we have) Identification Retaliation (When we identify our problems, we retaliate) Education Inspiration No substitution (It is good to be both educated and inspired, but there is no substitution for the other) Solution Conclusion (When we have the solution, it's time to conclude) |

(NOTE: in this interpretation, the obsession with television can be substituted with any other kinds of obsessions or addictions. i also want to say that i only really listened to this song just because it sounded good. but once i paid attention to the lyrics, i saw how deep it really is. this interpretation might even be wrong and that there is some deeper meaning but, hey i tried.) He just sits, and watches the people in the boxes Everything he sees he absorbs and adopts it Heeeeee mimics and he mocks it -he sits and watches television. "he absorbs and adopts it.. he mimics and he mocks" shows how much television is having an influence on his life Really hates the box but he can't remember how to stop, it Uhh, so he continues to watch it Hopin that it'll give him somethin that he can box with Or how the locksmith, see the box as, locked in the box Ain't got the combination to unlock, it -he notices his addiction to television but can't get away from television That's why he watch-es, scared to look away Cause at that moment, it might show him What to take off the locks with So he chained hisself to the box, took a lock and then he locked it Swallowed the combination and then forgot, it As the doctors jot it all down, with they pens and pencils The same ones that took away his voice And just left this instrumental, like that -irony in that he is trying to find the answer to stop his obsession with television but he thinks the answer can be gotten by watching MORE television. he is so intent in finding answers that he chains himself, defeating the goal of getting AWAY from the box. the problem is that he thinks the answer can be gotten (from doctors, the "box" or television, etc). the real answer is within himself. that's why the song is called "The Instrumental"; all the beats and tunes are there, the only thing missing is his voice. as people said, people blindly follow the media and peers (the tunes and beats of the song). And he never lies (he never lies, he never lies, uhh) And he never lies (uhh, he never lies, he never lies, no) And he never lies (he never lies) Cause he never said anything at all -he's a fake. you can't form an opinion about him. not a thing he does, not a thing he says represents him anyway. -from a media perspective, he only repeats what the news tells him, whether it be partially true. so you can't really criticize him for not saying the truth. then again, you can't really critize him at all because he's a blind sheep. He just sits, and listens to the people in the boxes Everything he hears he absorbs and adopts it Anything not comin out the box he blocks it See he loves to box and hope they never stop it Anything the box tell him to do, he does it Anything it tell him to get, he shops and he cops it -another type of obsession or a continuing of the teleivion. "anything not coming out of the box he blocks it" means that he doesn't pay attention to what other people are saying. he only believes the box and that is what all that matters to him. he does whatever the box tells him to do. he gets whatever the box tells him to get (whether he "shops and cops" it, buys or steals it) He protects the box, locks it in a box when he goes to sleep, but he never sleeps Cause he stays up to watch it, scared to look away Cause at that moment, it might get stolen And that's the last of the boxes So he chained hisself to the box, took a lock and then he locked it Swallowed the combination and then forgot, it As the doctors jot it all down, with they pens and pencils The same ones that took away his voice And just left this instrumental, like that -he hides his obsession with this box (whether the song is still talking about television) with ANOTHER obsession. again, the doctors think they can solve this problem themselves, when again, he is missing his say, his voice of the instrumental. (Anything at all..) He never lies Uhh, and you can't tell me just who you are You burn them flows just to hide those scars You built that roof just to hide those stars Now you can't take it back to the start And you can't tell me just who you are You burn them flows just to hide those scars You built that roof just to hide those stars Now you can't take it back to the start -obviously a typo in the lyrics. it's supposed to be "You buy them clothes just to hide those scars". anyways, he is trying to hide his problems and shortcomings, when it only makes it worse. "You built that roof just to hide those stars". the stars can either mean the truth (stars = light = truth) or the people in his life. he builds a roof so he can hide the stars. in reality, the stars are still there, and in contrast to what he tries to do, he hides himself instead. By trying to hide his problems and hiding himself from people/truth that can help him, he's not fixing anything. He "can't take it back to the start" meaning he can't start over his life anew this way. |
