Everyone who thinks they could write a more meaningful song when they were 12 are completely ignorant. Considering the whole album is a concept album based off the book "The Age of Spiritual Machines" , (the R.K. readings between the songs are form this book), and where this song is placed in the album, the song is comparing humans to machines. Basically the song is saying that humans are resilient creatures, and that our ability to persevere and recover, and our spiritual capacity sets us high above Artificial Intelligence. "It's all messed up but we're alive/we'll survive" fits well into this interpretation. At the end, the "she gets high she gets lost" is talking about a girl with a disease, probably cancer, who is able to recover her body and work through the suffering. That is something machines aren't able to do. This is only understood if you listen to the rest of the album and do some research into the book. Without knowing this it can be interpreted just that life sucks sometimes but the human spirit is capable of persevering through anything. |

I love the irony of this song, a hit single about someone with no inspiration to write a hit single. I couldn't figure out what the chorus meant for a while but this is my interpretation: -You can't start a fire without a spark (you can't write a great song without inspiration) -This gun's for hire (He's forced by his label to write one anyway, I like to think Bruce is the "gun" who fires shots unwillingly by the "gunman": his record company) -even if we're just dancing in the dark (even if people are just dancing to a song with no passion, no "fire") What do you think? |

Also, even the title can be taken in two ways. Either he doesn't know what he's looking for in life, or he does know but he's keeping it a secret from the audience. Maybe so everyone can interpret it differently? I feel like i've over-analyzed this song, but it's so interesting/beautiful. |

I think the writer probably left the lyrics open to interpretation so that we could relate it to our lives in whichever way fits us best. I can see how it could be about a girl, and when he sings "Lord i've been waiting for you" he could be talking to both God and the potential girl (the "you") at the same time. In the context of a girl I think it fits best if he's asking God to find his "soul mate". He's made mistakes with relationships in the past, and he's ready to find "the one" but he hasn't found her yet. I also think generally it could be about realizing that he's wasted his life and has taken it for granted for so long, and now he's ready to live life with meaning. In this context, the "please, i'll be strong, i'm finding it hard to resist" lyrics make more sense. For example, if you think of a drug addict who decides to come clean and lead a better life, he still might find the easy escape of the drugs "hard to resist". Also in this context it might be seen as more religious, but it seems like he's just trying to reach out to something, whatever happens to be out there, to help him transform into a better person. I would say to interpret it however you like, some lyrics work better in certain contexts than others, so to me this song has multiple meanings. |
