R.E.M. – Losing My Religion Lyrics 16 years ago
O.K., this is going to get interesting. Even if this song is symbolic for a different meaning, the fact that these lyrics are brave enough to be written with a phrase of "Losing my religion", means that at least some, but most likely all of the meaning relates literally, to the feeling of a person losing their religion and being judged by other religious people for doing so("that's me in the spot light", and"I thought that I heard you laughing"). Other believers also make him feel like he is not good enough for them because he is losing his religion. The line "Choosing my confessions" shows how religious people pick and choose their own confessions, because they don't want to feel too guilty about everything they do bad/wrong. That line could also be about that the person losing his religion is choosing his own confession to what he tells the other religious people what he believes, that he doesn't want to tell them that he is having a lot of doubt in god/religion because he doesn't want the other believers to judge him more(also because of "Trying to keep an eye on you" is written in second person, where the other believers are trying to keep an eye on him, the more he reveals that he's losing his religion, the more they judge him(just like most religious people do). Also the line "you are not me " means everyone's different and is entitled to their own beliefs, so he doesn't want other believers judging him. "Oh no I've said too much " means that, because he's revealed that he's losing his religion, he now notices how quickly other believers judge him. "I set it up " means that he set it up, he already knew beforehand that the religious believers would judge him when he revealed that he's losing his religion, so he set it up, he planned to reveal the way he felt to them, just to remind himself that he was right, after revealing it, the believers did judge him. "Like a hurt, lost and blinded fool" could be about how ignorant believers are, and/or could be about how he's tired of being fake to other believers, making it seem like he was a believer, so now he finally wants them to know the way he really feels, or, "Like a hurt, lost and blinded fool" might be about the way believers make him feel when they judge him for losing his religion.
In the song he is also in conflict because he says that was just a dream, so that means he's being fake to others, making it seem like to them that he believes in his religion, but the way he really feels is what he feels in his dream. The song also describes why and what makes them feel this way. "Oh, life is bigger, It's bigger than you", meaning that the meaning of life, of nature, and the universe is not known by mankind, but mankind "thinks" they know with their religion, but all religions are man made. Now for the fun part, my personal opinion: It's possible that there's a god, but that seemed way more believable long ago when mankind knew nothing about science and nature. Because mankind knew nothing about that, and lived in a big scary world, it made people feel more safe and secure to believe that a "higher power" was looking out for them. However, as time went on, science and technology progressed and the more time that goes by, more and more solid evidence in various forms keeps being found that increases the likelihood that there is no god and no devil, that those beliefs were just what mankind thought it was long ago. When an earthquake, hurricane, lightening, flood, disease, etc killed off people, they assumed that it was a god or devil that made it happen, therefore, mankind in every culture around the world created ideas which led to stories which led to holy books, all written by man, not by "god". Again, there's a possibility of a god and devil but there's no proof, not from any holy book, not from dead sea scrolls or any other ancient stuff because they could all be lies, or just writings of the fantasies and/or beliefs of those people at the the time. Just because people then believed that long ago and wrote about it doesn't guarantee that it's true. And just because the dead sea scrolls are authentically about 2000 years old doesn't mean it's o.k. to assume that the content is true, all the scrolls are is just old parchments stating what they believed back then. All religions also claim to have "witnesses" that support their religion, so how can all the religions be right at the same time, because of their witnesses?, when many religions worship more than one god, and other religions worship one god? Don't tell me that all religions are worshiping the same god, because religions don't fit and mix with other religions and if you study all different religions, then you'll know why. Also, science and religion don't fit together either, which I can prove if someone chooses to email me about it. There may very well have never been a beginning of the universe, so it didn't have to be created, it may have always been here(just like believers say that god has always been here). Matter and anti matter(look up anti matter on wikipedia), most likely weren't created, as science clearly shows that "nothing can be created or destroyed, instead, it's transformed from one type of energy to the other". Science has already found long ago that energy is the smallest thing found so maybe energy is god, nature is god. However, that doesn't guarantee that we'll be able to keep our memories and personality after we die(alzheimer's disease already shows we can lose memories BEFORE we die, and besides, most people forget many memories in their life even if their healthy). When we die, our lungs and hearts stop, the blood stops getting pumped to our brain so our brain dies from lack of oxygen in the blood, then our bodies rot and worms/bugs eat us in the coffin(unless you're cremated). However, the matter that we once were now becomes fertilizer for the soil. Plants/bugs evolve through time, evolution, etc(nothing, no molecule is destroyed, instead, when we die, our molecules become different life later). I think it's o.k. to choose to believe in god by faith, even if the chance for a "god" are 1%, or less than 1%, (even like .0000000000000001% or less), but only if a person keeps in mind, that while it's o.k. to choose to believe by faith, THERE'S STILL NOT A GUARANTEE!!!, so anyone that believes 100% in god by "Blind faith" is just like it says, blind, and they end up using their religion as a placebo mind drug instead of using prozac, to give meaning in their lives and a drug "high" feeling, just like cocaine. Faith is the same as trust, it's a choice, but even if a person chooses to trust that there's a god, it still doesn't guarantee that it's true. However, I feel it's important to be optimistic about life instead of pessimistic, therefore it's o.k. to choose to believe in god as a choice with faith, but to realize at the same time that there's still not a guarantee that it's true. If a person has faith/trust in someone else, even 100% faith/trust, it's still not a guarantee that the other person won't let them down. If a person has faith/trust that another person loves them, there's not a guarantee that the other person really does love them back, because the other person could be lying. People's lives have plenty of meaning/purpose even if there's no god, and people can be good without god also. The words "good" and "evil" might very well only exist as far as how something good or bad can affect a person's survival(or lack of survival), but that doesn't mean that just because the words "bad, wrong, and evil" exist, it doesn't mean there's a hell, heaven, angels, devil or god. What's considered "bad, wrong, or evil" in one country is quite different than in another country, depending on each government laws, and even depending on each person's personal views about what's right/wrong or evil. If a child plays with a knife, the parent tells the child it's "bad" and "wrong" because that child could hurt himself or even die from the knife(affecting survival). The word "evil" stemmed from the words bad/wrong long ago. When a shark killed someone long ago, people then labeled the shark a "devil" or "demon" and labeled the shark "evil"(and labeled evil to hurricanes, diseases, earthquakes, etc also). The meaning of "evil" is man made, just like the meaning of "good" created meanings of "miracles", "blessings", and "angels", and "Heaven", and "god". Evil doesn't make a man kill another person with a gun or knife, ignorance and/or anger does, and mankind's ignorance or anger isn't evil, it's just human ignorance and anger, either caused from jealousy, greed, selfishness, lack of education, or stemmed from being abused as a child, or from some other personal reason, but because mankind can be ignorant and/or angry, doesn't mean there's a hell and a devil. Just because what's considered good can increase mankind's survival if mankind is good to each other, doesn't mean there's a god that's good, just because man has decided what he thinks is good. I'm not atheist, I'm a realist. I'm not agnostic, because I've actually taken the time to think about this my whole life. I was born into a catholic family, and I used to be a 100% blind faith drug user before for most of my life, but I got rehab for the past 10 or so years. I got a reality check when I started studying all other religions(and non religions) to learn about everyone's perspective. The most "realistic" and "wisest" way of thinking is to realize that, o.k., there "might" be a god, so it's o.k. to choose to believe just in case, but it's not "realistic" to assume that there's a guarantee that it's true, nothing is guaranteed, but then again, never say never, therefore, go ahead, choose to believe, but be careful, please don't let your guard down and choose to believe there's a 100% guarantee, otherwise you risk using religion as a drug high for your problems, like most believers do. I'm not a pessimist, if I was, then I'd be atheist, I'm not atheist because like I said, there's a possibility of a god, and since faith is a choice, I choose to believe just in case(optimistic), but at the same time I don't get my hopes up and assume there's a 100% guarantee of it, that's foolish/unwise.

Black Lab – Keep Myself Awake Lyrics 16 years ago
I feel you are mistaken, you say there are things wrong with the song, but that's just you reading it literally. It's symbolism, which you'll understand if you read my new posting below about the song meaning(I'm "GuitarTeacher"). Many and most songs use symbolic lyrics, phrases, and many times what appears to be contradicting lines, but if you study a song deeper, and get song writing/lyric writing training, then you'll find otherwise. The easiest songs to understand are the ones written with more literal and straight forward lyrics, but hey, those get boring after awhile, haven't you ever read poetry?

Black Lab – Keep Myself Awake Lyrics 16 years ago
I thought this website was supposed to be about people posting song meanings, not with how much you like the song. I think this song is great too, but looks like I'll be the first to post what I think the song may actually be about. O.k., from the beginning lyrics of the song, he says he "hates to talk like this, and hates to act as if there's something wrong, but can't say", so far the meaning could be that he doesn't want to show that something's bothering him to others, and finds it hard to say, but finally feels compelled to say it, when he goes on describing how he has a dream every night. The dream is not a good dream, most likely like a nightmare because in the chorus, he describes it as "always cold, always day, always here, always say I'm alright" could mean that he dreams that it's daytime, but that it's cold and the other person is always there in his dream telling him that he's alright, but really he's not. The other person could be someone he was in a relationship with, but she broke up with him and she's trying to tell him that he'll be alright. Many years past, but he's still haunted about that relationship and his feelings for her. He'll always still love her, but she dumped him and doesn't feel like he'll ever be over her because he still has dreams about it. The part "always say I'm alright" could also instead be himself trying to tell himself that, trying to make himself stronger, but that doesn't seem to be working too well. The next line of the chorus about "I'll be okay if I can keep myself awake" is obviously about him not wanting to fall asleep because if he does, he'll have the same repeating nightmare again. The next verse of "I get up early and, look around me and, Can't help but wonder what you mean " most likely means that everyday that he wakes up, he's still reminded of what she's told him before "that he'll be alright", but he "wonders what she means" by that especially because she's the one who broke up with him(she's shallow). Then the next part of "But I'm sleeping, I'm so deep in, so much more real to me, closer than reality" I think means that, even though he already woke up in the day, he states that he's still sleeping, almost like he's sleep walking because he's still haunted by it in the day when he's awake, especially because he goes on to say "I'm so deep in", meaning he's so deep in this mess of feeling this way, and that he was hurt so bad that the hurt and the painful memory seems more real to him than even reality. The line "Buying coffee by the pound" is obviously him trying to stay awake from the caffeine in the coffee, but from the last line "I can't keep myself awake" means he knows that even coffee won't keep him awake forever, and he'll eventually have to sleep, which means the nightmare will happen again of course. I know this song was on the movie "Buffy the vampire slayer", but I never saw that movie, I noticed that it is on that movie though, so this song may have a completely different movie about vampires trying to keep themselves awake or whatever, or about the character of this song getting bit and infected as a vampire, etc. Now it looks like I'll have to rent it to find out if this song was written for and about the movie, or if the song was written before the movie, and the song being chosen for the movie later.
