Thanks for that tidbit. Nice to hear what inspired the song. Ed Roland uses a lot of christian imagery to express the situation. |

Too bad. Collective Soul trying to be too cool on Howard Stern, and not saying how there are christian references in the song. And the bj reference....too sad. |

OK, why does no one get the religious implications of this song??? Maybe you do. I need to read all of the comments. My bad. He's quoting Jesus here: "Why drink the water from my hand"...Jesus said "he who drinks from me has eternal life" , "tilt your sun..." turn towards Jesus and "your cup runneth over again". The chorus: the bible says "Be neither cold, nor lukewarm, or God will spit you out of his mouth" refers to having faith, and the degree of commitment to God one has in their life. The chorus is saying, "I have lacked faith, so Jesus, spit me out!" Next verse: Why follow me to higher ground? Lost as you swear I am. Don't throw away your basic needs, Ambiance and vanity. These are Jesus words, according to the songwriter. Jesus is asking a sarcastic/rhetorical question, "why give up your earthly needs and follow me? You just think I'm lost!" The "December" verse, lost faith, broken promises, stop singing christin songs,....etc, you get the idea. Collective Soul is famous for it's religious undertones in their lyrics. |
