| Primitive Radio Gods – Standing Outside A Broken Phone Booth With Money In My Hand Lyrics

I take it to be a reflexion on how short life runs out (A life is time, they teach you growing up / The seconds ticking killed us all), and how this painful realization leads us to seek religious meaning (We sit outside and argue all night long / About a God we've never seen) yet this spiritual quest is corrupted by the individual (About a God we've never seen, but never fails to side with me) and then by religon itself (Ma Teresa's joined the mob and happy with her full time job).
The ending (You ride the waves and don't ask where they go/You swim like lions through the crest, etc) is the only rational conclusion: enjoy the trip and make the most of it.
So what is it that got the singer downhearted ever since they met? From the above I'd say it is that metaphorical ticking clock that counts the days to our death. Great song and great lyrics.

NOFX tend to make topical albums and I understand Punk In Drublic to be mostly about social outcasts: the hippie, the homeless, the punk guy, the elderly, and on this track, the pornstar. A feminist streak is obvious in this song about a woman taking control of her own body in the face of society's patriarchical conventions. It also boasts one of the catchiest riffs on what some consider NOFX's best album. |
