Great song...but it's meaning is not as deep as some of their other songs...I don't think it's heroin...It's about love and the indescribable feeling of love for someone...words and actions may get you to that point but once you are there, you belong to each other and the feeling is perfect. Anything that is said or done will only take away from that feeling. If you get to the top of a mountain, the only way to go is down, so stop, shut up and enjoy the silence.
I love the part where he says "vows are spoken to be broken". It belittles everything. This indescrible feeling of love is so stong even vows of marriage are "trivial" compared to it. |

It's about our addiction to relationships and our fear of loneliness. And more importantly how it makes us weak and puts us on the hook and vulnerable to manipulation. It's from the point of view of someone who will promise you the world if you just put give him your faith, surrender yourself...It's like....Just pick up the receiver and talk to me. You can tell me your deepest secrets/confessions and I'll forgive you...Martin's voice always seems shady and manipulative...i think a lot of depeche modes songs play on that. His voice either represents a darker side of us or the bad guy who will exploit our vulnerability. |

It's an analogy. He's describing the general feeling of obsession and desire with the feeling you get from heroin...it could be a girl, a work of art...anything, but that satisfaction itself that you get when something is perfect and you just want it continue forever....that's what he's talking about. |
