Modest Mouse – Sleepwalking Lyrics 16 years ago
One of my alltime favorite MM songs. It reminds me of falling for a girl, and growing up in a small town where getting drunk was the thing to do. After every stanza Brock plays the chorus, so while looking for a roadmap, sitting in the parking lot of the convenience store, and hanging at the riverside, Brock gets drunk, or sleep walks. For me it brings back past summers and the longing to have them back. Brock never really wanted to leave those teenage years, and so its bittersweet reminiscing about it.

Maybe Brock is taking a pessimistic approach to creation of man. I believe the chorus does reflect back to Adam and Eve, but the baby cum angels seem to be derogatory, reminding adam and eve of what they lost

Correction

Maybe Brock is taking a pessimistic approach to creation of man. I believe the chorus does reflect back to Adam and Eve. "Reminding you we used to be three and not just two" seem to be derogatory, reminding adam and eve of what they lost, the third being god.

I think the reference to the promised land in the beginnining proves my points even more

Maybe Brock is taking a pessimistic approach to creation of man. I believe the chorus does reflect back to Adam and Eve, but the baby cum angels seem to be derogatory, reminding adam and eve of what they lost. Furthermore baby cum angels might mean reproducing, mostly because the next line.
A third had just been made and we were swimming in the
water
Didn't know then, was it a son, was it a daughter?
I dont think this has shit to do with jesus being born, because wasnt jesus birthed years after Adam and Eve ate that fruit? I think its just stating how the world, as we know it, began. I get a more pessimistic feel because Adam and Eve were cast to the earth in dishonor, they lost everything because of human vice, and humans were then doomed to repeat this circle. I feel like the point of water was the further imply that humans were doomed to be on the same level with animals.

When it occurred to me that the animals are swimming
Around in the water in the oceans in our bodies
And another had been found, another ocean on the planet
Given that our blood is just like the Atlantic

And furthermore pessimism is expressed here:
Well, the universe is shaped exactly like the earth
If you go straight long enough you'll end up where you were

I feel like he's equating the universe to this endless circle metaphor from before.

On the album artwork it says Baby cum angels. I wonder if theres any other meaning to cum, because brock uses it alot and I just cant imagine his connotation being perverted, atleast not in this context

Ugly Casanova – Things I Don't Remember Lyrics 16 years ago
Kidmeh hit it on the dot for me. I absolutely love Modest Mouse, but Ugly Cassanova changed the whole perspective for me.
First off, the whole idea behind Ugly Cassanova was to be a side project where Brock could get out of Modest Mouse and experiment with more melancholy sounds. Being a musician myself its hard to produce music if its under the gun, which Brock had been doing. People are so damn judgemental of every lyric that Brock writes, which reflects what his producers want Brock to write about. I think Brock wanted to make some music for his own liking, hence the reasoning for this side project. Its truly easy to make music about things people want to hear, and its just as easy to put a bunch of indecipherable lyrics together to just put a song out there. Its more meaningful to write a song when you dont have the pressure of aiming it to satisfy an audience by a record label.
Whether or not Ugly Cassanova is based on fictional story sharpen your teeth is an amazing album in my opinion. Music is not about what the artist is trying to portray, its about how the listener interprets it, and theres infinite meanings to pull from this song alone. Each person takes a unique meaning from each song, and, if the listener can interpret the song to something they connect to then the artist has served their purpose. And whether or not Edward Graham is fake or not its a story that captures attention. Music is merely a form of storytelling, can anyone disagree with that?
Maybe Brock left these lyrics out of the liners because the lines are supposed to be interpreted and not analyzed. Maybe the line "there was cum on the piano" was supposed to be come instead. I dont have a fucking clue, there could be a million things running through Brocks head when he wrote that. Maybe this was a completely random song thats just patches of stray lyrics; wouldnt be the first time an artist did that. Maybe Brock took way too many drugs. Shit if I know. All I wanna know is what people take from it, not whats Brock's intended meaning, or whether or not he's a bullshitter.
One of the biggest things that popped up for me was this line:
Figured out what im good (for), making anything look better
how the hell could i blame her? even then i was a sailor

any takes on that?
