This song is very effective. I love the lines: 'If the hawks in the tress need the dead, If you're living you don't stand a chance.' AND 'Blood dripping from their lips, Teeth sinking into heart.' I think that the first two lines are really scary, offering no hope, horrifying. The second set of lines also scares me - it seems she is trying to use the metaphor of tigers feeding to express how brutal and dangerous love can be. She is using romantic parts of the body, 'lips' and 'heart', but then uses them in the description with something gory and deadly. Very powerful! |

I think that the sailors actually enjoy Mary Ane (I believe she is a girl) teasing them, even if at first they are angry/anoyed: 'Does it matter if our ANGER (that's what I believe the lyrics should read), doesn't even reach the bottom of a bathtub?'. It is saying that it doesn't really matter that they were angry at the beginning, in the end their anger just dissipates. I also think that they struggle to try and keep straight faces - they act as though they are really upset, but then seeing Mary Ane's face makes them smile: 'And the sails reflect the moon'. It is a metaphor for how clear and blaitant the look is on their faces. |
