"I was just bony hands as cold as a winter pole You held a warm stone out new flowing blood to hold" Talking about how he wasn't used to things, specifically the "bony hands, cold as a winter pole" talking about how he's never been in a relationship, and the "warm stone" and "new flowing blood to hold" referring to her hand, with flowing blood, and feeling warm to him, so almost literal in poetic form. "Oh what a contrast you were to the brutes in the halls My timid young fingers held a decent animal" The contrast part is talking about how different she is, especially nice. The timid young fingers held a decent animal talking about holding her hand, fingers intertwined, as if he was holding her, the "decent animal" "Over the ramparts you tossed The scent of your skin and some foreign flowers Tied to a brick Sweet as a song The years have been short But the days were long" The ramparts is his defense, so to say, he had no open feelings, until she broke him with a brick, like a brick in a window, but in a romantic way, that made him feel loved, and the years felt far too short in retrospect, when the days felt long, as if it would last forever. " Cool of a temperate breeze from dark skies to wet grass We fell in a field it seems now a thousand summers passed When our kite lines first crossed We tied them into knots And finally fly apart We had to cut them off" The coolness of a temperate breeze is referring to how comfortable they felt with each other, and the falling in the field is describing how fast it seemed to happen, and thousand summers simply to how much time they spent together. The kite lines is symbolizing their attraction to each other, and it seems as if they were preparing for it to stay forever(tied them into knots)and when they decided it would distract them to be so attracted, they had to cut the ties. The overall sound of the song is more melancholy than sad, so instead of feeling loss, he's feeling more so like there was a mistake made, which would be not letting space between them. "Since then it's been a book you read in reverse So you understand less as the pages turn Or a movie so crass And awkwardly cast Even I could be the star" The book is referring to how then, it made so much sense what they were doing, but now, it doesn't. The crass movie is referring to their lack of sensitivity, awkwardly cast explaining that they were almost opposites, but that's what made it perfect, which is what the "even I could be the star refers to. "I don't look back much as a rule And all this way before murder was cool But your memory is here and I'd it to stay Warm light on a winter day" To avoid pain, he doesn't think too much about what happened those years, and he's saying he decided this long before, maybe even before it was done? Only part I'm lost on(way before murder was cool). And even though he doesn't look back on it, he wants to remember that it happened, so instead of reminiscing, he simply thinks it, warm light referring to how it still gives him those butterflies someone once before mentioned here. "Over the ramparts you tossed The scent of your skin and some foreign flowers Tied to a brick Sweet as a song The years have been short But the days go slowly by Two loose kites falling from the sky Drawn to the ground and an end to flight " Mostly the same as the last, but saying "days go slowly by" as if he's thinking about it this second, or maybe it's happening again? Another lost part, sort of. The loose kites are the two cut in the previous chorus, and he's referring to now he's not thinking about it, and it's over. I believe the overall "theme" so to say, is that he is currently going through something(not in his current age, but written as if he was in high school, I suppose), describing it as if it's a first love, which very well could be, but it ended and now he's over it. Like he's telling a story, almost. I hope someone reads this, because I'm confident in my opinion. As for the song, it's so amazing. I just can't stop listening to it and playing and singing along. |
