Well, I can't relate to any "meaningless flings". At least not in the last 20 + years (yeah, yeah, I am OLD)... But, to me this song reminds me of how we each have many sides to our lives. Many different personas...? Is that the right word? It reminds me of that Alanis Morissete (I know I spelled that wrong) song. You know the one! It goes.... something like.... I'm a bitch, I'm a mother, I'm a child, I'm a lover.... I am your dream... (or heaven)... I am hell... Not in between.... Er something along those lines. And I think we all make decisions and we wish we could be the college kid making them. No responsibilities whatsoever (or very FEW responsibilities, anyway). I don't want to be a child, or a mother, but a LOVER when I make decisions about ME. That's what I think. Wouldn't our lives be different if we didn't have responsibility? Damnation! |

Isn't there a saying that goes, "If you love someone, set them free"? As completely sick I have been over this love (and will always love him) I believe he wants to be set free. I believe he is trying to send me signs to help him be free from this pain we have been going through. So, it is with this song that I say, "Goodbye My Love". I need to go now. |

To me? It sounds like someone crying out for help. He is tired, weary, depressed and negative. He is not seeing "the bright side" of life. Yes, things happen in our lives that throw us for a loop or make us feel downtrodden. How are we going to deal with it/them? How do we want to live our lives? We have ONLY one and no one really knows what happens when we die. Yes, we can guess, hope and have faith, but no one has a damn clue (truth be told). So live it to the fullest. Be the best of whoever you are. Make your choices and live with them. Be bold. Don't think there is only one way to live. To me? I choose life. I choose love. I choose happiness. I choose my heart over my head. The rest will follow. |

There is a documentary on the making of these songs (Woody's songs, for "Mermaid Avenue I and II). It is very interesting to hear Woody's daughter, Nora(h), talk about her dad, his life and her childhood. What a colorful character Woody was. As much as I love and respect Bob Dylan, I think Billy Bragg and Wilco did a phenomenal job with these songs. "California Stars" is a gem. From the moment I heard this song many years ago, it has been one of my favorites. These lyrics are so beautiful and simple. I agree with some comments above. It is "dreamy", yes.... And it definitely makes me think of the one I love and the comfort he brings to me. Feelings of happiness, contentment and peace. "I'd give this world...." To me, Woody Guthrie was an incredible poet and such an interesting man. Jeff Tweedy is a musical genius. I am thrilled that it all came together on the Mermaid Avenue CDs. If you don't own them, go out and buy them at the record store! |
