I've always thought of the song as some sort of call to honesty/integrity. Maybe the guy is completely self-involved, but maybe he's also trying to find something he truly believes in, so as he searches high and low through all these roles, he comes off as fake and obsessed with how he's viewed. After all, society isn't always welcoming with open arms; that's to say that there will always be some sort of standard/label (because that's human nature, IMO) with how we judge ourselves and others. Maybe, the search for oneself is the mystery? In addition to why someone may be attracted to someone seen to be 'fickle' or fake. That's not to say that he isn't only doing if for attention from the narrator/women being a bit of a cad about it. Because, sadly, there are people who act like that. : ) (PS) I've always kind of associated it with Mulder too. Thought I was the only one! |
