Family Force 5 – Replace Me Lyrics 16 years ago
"My flesh is leading me astray that's why I started to decay and I will slowly rot away but I can't feel that anyway"

'My flesh is leading me astray' probably refers to the human nature, the old self (see the Apostle Paul's writings), such as dieing to the flesh, etc. particularly since it's 'leading me astray', which sounds like sin nature. We need God's help to overcome it - we can't do it on our own (which is the message of the whole song).

'I will slowly rot away' sounds like the image built up in the Old Testament (particularly in Psalms) of how we along with all creation will perish, but "the Lord stands forever".

Just some thoughts.

Yea Isabelle, that makes sense. Like, all through the song I was thinking... "die to self, martyrdom, die to self...", with lines like "Every day I die for you" and "front lines".

But then I got to the line "Throw me in the fire, I'd walk right through", which rules out being about human-self-sacrifice (since the idea of fire is that it overcomes and consumes), and I figure it's a reference to the fiery furnace in Daniel chapter 3. "He said, 'Look! I see four men walking around in the fire, unbound and unharmed, and the fourth looks like a son of the gods.' " (Daniel 3:25)

And the same applies to "I'll cover for you, Take a hit, I'm your alibi, I got your back", since we're not exactly going to "cover for" God, or "have his back". It's the other way around - He's the one that'll do that for us.

Yea too right. I just find the ambiguity frustrating. Like, when they do write Christian songs, make it obvious. Although I guess they already do... people will interpret things how they want to.

I'll 4th that :P
Yea, I totally agree. That frustrates me because it seems that as soon as you step away from Casting Crowns and Third Day sort of stuff and move towards more rock, pumping, funky music, almost all the bands seem to have the same problem. Relient K, Switchfoot, etc. come to mind. It's like, well if you're going to write a song about salvation or how you relate to God, etc. (the point being to communicate that to someone), then it's not quite working when non-Christians can then pick up the lyrics and mistake it for either a romance, a car, emo-kinda-stuff (with some other bands), or something else. It kind of defies the point... The only song I can think of by Relient K that is unmistakeably and specifically about God and Jesus is Deathbed... (which is awesome :D).

And then since I'm so used to it being so subtle and indirect, when I listen to bands with more direct lyrics like Stellar Kart I feel like flinching when they mention Jesus... (and then I want to flinch about wanting to flinch... agh!)

However, I have been quite impressed with FF5's lyrics as far as this goes, since they seem to be far less ambiguous about these things than other bands, particularly with songs like Replace Me, for example. And they seem to have much stronger messages too :D
