This song was originally called Jim Caroll. I'm not sure if that means anything or not.

Thurston wrote this for Kim to sing. It's supposed to be about the commodification of punk.

The whole song is about living in New York City.
Part z) is about the Preppy Murder (Robert Chambers) in Central Park.

Sonic Youth – My Friend Goo Lyrics 16 years ago
The song is about a punk rock shit who is empowered and doesn't give a fuck. The boys in the scene think she's hot and try to hit on her without knowing anything about her - not even her name. She just shrugs them off.

White feminist woman's curiosity with radicalism outside of just the feminist context.

Sonic Youth – Mote Lyrics 16 years ago
Sonic Youth says that it's based on Sylvia Plath's poem Eye-Mote. There are even youtube videos of live performances where Sonic Youth refers to the song title as Eye-Mote rather than Mote.

This is one of my favorites.

Sonic Youth – Massage The History Lyrics 16 years ago
Apparently this was inspired by Buffy the Vampire Slayer (which Coco loves)....it's also supposed to be a metaphore for the record industry.

Sonic Youth – Anti-Orgasm Lyrics 16 years ago

In this interview Thurston talks about how he was inspired by a German film called Eight Miles High. To quote the article:

German title is The Wild Life, and it's a biopic about this woman Uschi Obermaier. She was a young fashion model in Germany in the '60s, and she sort of ran away to a commune in Berlin that was called Kommune 1, where all these radical hippie commune dwellers walk around nude. It was a big sensation among young people in Germany at that time about this woman coming out of the fashion world and joining forces with this anti-authoritarian, anti-consumerist faction.

And one of the scenes of the movie is her in bed with her hippie lover and one of the other radicals is in bed with another woman–everybody sort of sleeps together–and he's not able to get it up. Her boyfriend says, "You know what his problem is: he's anti-orgasm." And I thought that was amusing, the politicizing of any sort of fear or repression in one's life, even though they think they're so liberated. So yeah, anti-war. Or "Anti-god is anti-orgasm" is the other line in the song. There are people applying that kind of feeling of arousal to conflict. People lust for war as well as lust for religion and the salvation that it promises.

Sonic Youth – Antenna Lyrics 16 years ago
I agree with Santiagof - it actually makes a lot of sense that the subject of this song would be the band in itself. The lyrics seem to insinuate both how timeless and how rusty their own history is. Their history is inescapable and permanent. It’s almost as though Sonic Youth cannot escape their own narratives about themselves and their place of influence in the music scene. Sonic Youth also doesn’t want to fall into history so they continue to create new music so they don’t fade away. I think that some of these ideas cumulate with the timeless images of New York City in the first verse. New York City is their origin and a place where they constantly go back to. The metaphors of the city being full of grime, gore, sex shows (cruises the street for pleasure) remain cemented in the public’s (and even the band’s) psyche even though there have been drastic changes to the city during the bands 30 year history. The sex clubs in Times Square have been closed, the lower east side is now a tourist venue etc. But, no matter what, there is still a heavy foundation on these images of a past New York and past New York musicians.

A tribute to the earlier Sonic Youth days to say the least. I totally hear some of Sister.

I agree, this is likely about a prostitute or a least a sexual encounter with women who has a negative reputation.

Yes, and I love everything on the Eternal.

I think that this is a pop culture critique of the Hollywood media culture of watching young girls self destruct. These images of girls drinking and plastering themselves fuel the nation. We get off as a culture on watching these teenage girls fall apart. It is in for girls to drink themselves into rehab for popularity and acceptance. This is just plain oppressive to everybody.

At the same time, the woman is also asking for the male to do some of the work for her - to levitate her, to make sure that she is also heard.

I think that the metaphore of a woman who wants to literally embody the music is used to symbolize how misogynistic the music culture is and how little impact most female artists have. With Kim screaming this opening, this is also an ironic song about how women's voices are rarely acknowledged no matter how loud they may be speaking. Words continue to be put in thier mouths. Hence the fake dialogue - "what's it like to be a girl in a band? i don't quite understand. That's so quaint to hear. I feel so faint my dear."

the key energy of free love is enveloped with chaos. the erotic is not always soft and pleasant — sometimes it’s an arena of pain and anarchy. That chaos is essential for having a wholistic experience. once again sonic youth is full of remarkably astute observations.
