Dream Theater – Goodnight Kiss Lyrics 12 years ago
I think this is actually Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. The mother is having flashbacks (and distortions) of a traumatic event - The death of her child. She displays feelings of depression, anger, and estrangement, which are consistent with PTSD.

Pink Floyd – The Thin Ice Lyrics 14 years ago
I'm picturing someone leaving home on bad terms, carrying the heavy burden of disapproval, unprepared for the cold world that awaits. The safety net of forgiveness is replaced by thin ice, ready to drop you at a single misstep. The illusory world of the child cracks and you descend into a cold reality.

Side note: the lyrics "If you should go skating on the thin ice of modern life" remind me of Jethro Tull's "Skating away on the thin ice of a new day".

Dream Theater – The Count of Tuscany Lyrics 16 years ago
DTleet, I think you may be onto something with Montalcino, and the paragraph I visualized as indicating some sort of satanic ritual could just as easily be a spooky old chapel at night. But even if this answers the question of where, the question of who still remains, and this doesn't really explain the "cannibal curator". The Hannibal connection seems to be a dead end, which is why I went so far out on a limb in the first place. You're probably right that we'll need some hints from the source to crack this one, but it doesn't hurt to try anyway.

Spock's Beard – The Light Lyrics 16 years ago
This is one of my favorite songs as well, and im_a_pirate's explanation makes a lot of sense. When I first heard the song though, I took something completely different from it, so I thought I'd share that:

Suppose "the light" is the light of happiness, and the song is about one man trying to figure out who he is and who he needs to be. He's going through phases where he's trying to be an average joe (critical masses), a person of influence (centerfold), a stoner (garden people), a loner (man in the mountain), a daily party-goer who lives in the moment (senor velasco) and a punk who doesn't care what people think (catfish man). Then finally he asks, which is the path in life that will lead me to true happiness? ("where is that straight line that I can hold up to the light?")

It's more of a reach I guess, and probably influenced by my own experiences, but then that's kind of the point. Anyway, I'm not saying it's the right or best explanation, just an alternate one to think about.

Dream Theater – The Count of Tuscany Lyrics 16 years ago
The Hannibal Lecter connection makes sense, but I'm still not sure who the "count" is. The only possibility I could think of is Pietro Pacciani's brother.

Pacciani lived in Italy and is believed to have inspired the Hannibal character, but he died in 1998. It could be his brother was showing Petrucci a photograph, except as far as I know, Pacciani was neither bearded nor a historian.

There are, however, conspiracy theories floating around on the internet that try to connect him with a satanic cult and a certain pedophile priest, which might help explain this paragraph:

"Would you like to see
Our secret holy place
I come here late at night
To pray to him by candlelight
Then peering through the glass
I saw with disbelief
Still dressed in royal clothes
The saint behind the altar"

Perhaps this was taking place in Petrucci's imagination, and the "count" explained to him that they were "fables and tales all handed down through time". It's a stretch, I admit, but it's the best I could come up with.

If anyone else has an idea who this mysterious count might be, I'm very curious about it.
