"Send out the morning birds To sing of the damage Now that the calm's returned I know I can't manage" [The first verse sounds as though she had just gotten over a difficult breakup. "Now that the calm's returned" is her just beginning to move on and accept the breakup. "I know I can't manage" could imply she needs the help of someone else to move on (possibly friends or a new love interest)] "You're standing in my doorway Though he's asleep in my bed The steady murmur Always in my head" [Her ex returns only to discover she is now with someone else. Thoughts of her ex are now always on her mind, possibly contemplating getting back together with the person.] "You're the finest thing that I've done The hurricane I'll never outrun I could wait around for the dust to still But I don't believe that it ever will" [Her past relationship was possibly the happiest moment in her life, but the breakup has changed her. And she no longer feels the same way about her ex. And now she doesn't think those feelings will ever return because of how badly she was hurt.] "And since the roof fell in I'll lean on what matters Caught in the slightest wind Everything else unravels" [Her ex returning has opened many wounds, so she leans on what matters (friends and family) to help her sort everything out.] "You're standing in my doorway Seven cities ago The days are racing But you come back too slow" [She's still thinking of him returning, but realizing that it's too late and that she's moved on.] "You're the finest thing that I've done The hurricane I'll never outrun I could wait around for the dust to still But I don't believe that it ever will" [The chorus is reinforcing that even though she loved her ex, the breakup has changed her feelings for him, and she doesn't think she'll ever feel the same way. "The hurricane (she'll) never outrun".] |

| [Edit]: The last line makes it seem he is determined to win her back, not him moving on. | |

This song works better when listening to "What For" as well. The pair are my favorite from the album. "I can never win with you I try, but you don't let me through Well, what's the point in fighting when we're done?" This is a relationship that has already ended, and the singer is attempting to mend it in some way. "Well, I don't know what to say Every word just makes you turn away And I don't know what to do Every day I wanna be with you Well, I've lost the battle and I'm losing the war And I keep on asking myself what for If you believe in fate and destiny Well, then open your eyes and believe in me Believe in me Believe in me" The singer attempts to apologize and make amends, but it only seems to be pushing their love interest further away. No matter what he does, she seems to grow more distant from him with every move he makes. The song "What For" is referred to in the chorus, letting us know that the two songs are dealing with the same relationship. This lets us know that "What For" isn't actually a song contemplating a breakup, but rather regreting it after the fact. The singer almost attempts to warn himself before he makes the mistake, despite it already having happened. "I call up and apologize But you just think it's one big lie Well, don't know you're pushing me away?" She either doesn't believe he's sincere, or is afraid of having her heart broken by him again. Meanwhile the singer is slowly losing hope after every rejection. "We've been through so much together You can't tell me the past will never mean a thing It's more than a memory" He's hoping she'll remember all of the positive times in their relationship, and relaize there is some good left between them. "'Cause every one I see around Tells me that I'm such a fool For making you my punching bag When things really weren't that bad" He didn't treat her well at the end of the relationship, which he regrets, because things could have easily been mended in comparison to his current standings with her. He believes breaking up with her was an overreaction to minor problems. "I've lost you now I've lost you now (I've lost you now) And I don't know how to get you back I'm not myself I'm not myself I gotta get us back on track" He's realized that she will never forgive him and there is nothing he can do to change that. The last two lines indicate he wants to move on if he can't have her. |

That line is definitely a reference to "Raisin in the Sun", but I think it has a different meaning in the song. I believe she was in a relationship that was initially great and everything she had hoped for, but it eventually went sour. It's that memory of that perfect moment that kept her with that person, hoping that it will come back. At some point she realizes the relationship will never be what it once was, so she decides to end it. |

"I do believe that the sort of affection described in this song is more pure than what has been suggested. What I think he describes in having been in love with someone and now regretting and hating that the relationship has ending. As far as hiding in the shadows, he is trying to escape the memory of her because she was an angel and he wishes that he had not given her away. The lurker who lusts after blood and love is just someone that he seems to want to protect her from and through this he is stating (in a sort of extended metaphor fashion) that he is better for her than many others could be and that his sort of love is more pure. The bridge seems to state this feeling of how she always meant so much and that she never quite loved him the same way. And how he is now struggling with himself in wanting her but also in wanting to get over her. And so he has this sort of disease and infection of her. And, really: It's the Hush Sound. Nobody's going to get raped in a Hush Sound song." This was my interpretation of the song as well. I would go as far to say this seems like an extension of the songs "As You Cry" and "Not Your Concern". "As You Cry" deals with a relationship ending, while "Not Your Concern" deals with the reasoning behind the breakup itself. "Hospital Bed Crawl" then leads to the regret of letting someone special go and trying to get over them. They all seem connected to me and seem very fitting in an album titled Goodbye Blues |
