He was raised by a Baptist Minister in Ravenna, Ohio (about 30 min from my door, which I think is cool) so what I think he's saying is that all he was taught about God and life he's now realizing is wrong and he needs to figure out what life is all about on a higher level. His word choice uses a lot of the Biblical ideas...the flood, Peter was the "rock" upon which Jesus built his church. I also think the line "I thought the sun would come deliver me" is a play on the word "sun" if you replae that with "son" you could easly see that he could be talking about Christ, the son of God. Again, going back to the ideas he was taught as a child and how he now sees they're wrong... |

| in my opinion, he's saying when we're born we're pure but allow ourselves to be ruled by will alone and we do not progress and leave (die) just as we were born. we don't focus on self-improvement and do not try to understand ourselves...we just follow our will and that is not what is intended for us. | |

In my opinion, he's talking about letting your mind expand- probably letting yourself go after taking a psychological drug. If you know anything about Maynard and especially their album LateralUS, they're big into the mystical effects these types of drugs have and their link to the human spirit and your own spirituality. That's a major reason they had Alex Grey do the artwork for that album (I know this song is from Undertow-i'm just saying) and also why Maynard talks about Timothy Leary as much as he does. He's saying lay back, let it in, it will bring us closer (to understanding our existence) and it will unlock a cavern of treasures that have been locked up inside you and you didn't even know it was there... just my 2 cents. |
