Manilow wrote the original lyric (First verse and chorus are his) after touring with Bette Midler, and it is claimed he wrote it for his dog Bagel. The second verse was written by Manilows best friend Marty Panzer, who also fine tuned the chorus.

This song was written by Manilow when he was dating Melissa Manchester (which explains the Sweet Melissa line). He wrote the chorus and Adrienne Anderson re-wrote the verses. He wanted it to be his 'Hey Jude'
