The guy in the video is named Kevin, and he is very sad because he's not exatcly at a high point in his life. The guy who made the ADORABLE music video explains it pretty well, check out his commentary. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LwPsjGeZ_G4 |

This song is about restlessness with one present situation. He wants to leave his town and find something better. This yearing to leave is pretty universal, but i've noticed it espcially in suburban kids i grew up with. Eventually you out grow your cage and have to find "what's out there". |

It could be impling sex, but i think that its more about protecting and watching over this girl. He keeps her from falling off the bed, and gently brings her back, and sort of watches over her as she sleeps. |

| Emmylou Harris – Didn't Leave Nobody But The Baby Lyrics

Before i saw the movie, i had a mental picture of what was happening during this song. (this is just my personal interaptation, don't hate me!)
I always saw an elderly black slave woman in the pre-Civil war south rocking a newborn baby (because its mother had died during child-birth) and she was singing this lullyabye to the baby. It was her way of saying that she would "adopt" the baby and take the place of the mother, and that life was going to be okay because she would watch out for the baby. (imagine my shock when i saw the movie and saw what was really going on!! :)
Anyway you interprate it, its a beautiful song. |

I agree totally with alxjpow. It sounds like the narrotor has been medicated for something (depression, bipolar disorder?), cheated on ("air smelled of deceit", "holes in her story")and he's gonna hang himself where she'll see his "danglin' feet". God, its quite dpressing for such a happy tune! (orginally i thought is was about two kids on the swings :)

I can't help but think of the man he's refering to in the last stanza as the ideal Christ/Buddah figure. (Hold on, i can qualify that!) I feel that both would be extremly tolerant people ("you'll never have to choose a side") and know "..wrong from right" without being caught up in it like the "flocks of sheep" (religious fanatics?). And the line about "breaking him open" may be a reference to "the rebel" being perscuted for his beliefs, or lack of (sorta like Jesus). Either way, i think the narrotor is making a statment that religion are not nessarily sacred because of the subjective human element invovled and that rather than practice the religion perfectly, people should strive more for the morality that religious leader (like Buddah, Jesus, etc) called for, but above all, humans should enjoy life because there might not be an afterlife at all. |

I don't know why, but the line about waking up in a hospital reminds me of the first X-Men movie where Wolverine wakes up at the school and almost strangles Jean ^_^'
Personally, i think this song is about an unheeded warning that is starting to catch up with the narrator. It could also have alot to do fears and insecurites, like when he's listing off all the bad stuff that could possibly happen. But that's just my take on it. :) |
