Enough with Kurt already. Unfortunately, Courtney will always have to live with the 'stigma', and if you want to, it is easy to relate the song with Kurt. But, as rocket_surfer said, I think this could also be about Billy Corgan. When she says "Three chords in your pocket tonight" it reminded me of the chords of Celebrity Skin. She has reportedly said she hated those riffs, and Billy Corgan had come up with them and insisted that they would make the song a hit. And they did. So maybe this is Courtney's way of, once again, reclaiming her place against a man. She was always overshadowed by Kurt, so she didn't like the fact that Billy was part of the success of Hole's big comeback album (Celebrity Skin). I think this song talks about Love's wishes to be better than men, and to stand on her own two feet. |

I looove this song! It sounds like a child's wishful thinking... you know, when you're a kid you would love to have your own city, where everyone would get along, or dream about being a dinosaur or know a million words! And the way she sings it is very childish, like a shy kid! Looove it! |

Wow I' ve never thought of the whole heroine addict prostitute thing, but it totally makes sense! I've always thought of the song as a description of the lifestyle of teenagers... they go out, meet people, have sex with them... dance, promiscuity, yada yada yada... "You are so sweet dancing to that beat" = You see someone you like at a club, dancing. The "meat market" would be the club, where "the boys and the girls watch each other eat", i mean, they make out with each other. But they really wanna watch each other sleep, meaning they want to go home and have sex... And the whole "walking through the city like a drunk but not" is about they going out of the club, being drunk but trying to hide it (like a drunk BUT NOT). And the "I am one of your people but the cars don't stop" line to me makes reference to drunk driving accidents... when you are drunk you can't even cross the street properly and a drunk driver can hit you, even if he's one of your people! "It's been a long time since before I've been touched, now I'm getting touched all the time" = Someone who wasn't like that before and now enters this lifestyle. He/she used to be shy about sex, but now he goes to 'meat markets' haha. "And it's only a matter of who, and it's only a matter of when" = Sometimes people can hook up with somebody only to show off, they use people as objects (which are sold in a market). The "addiction to hands and feet" is basically the addiction to casual sex! I still like the prostitute idea better , but just to enjoy the polisemy of Regina's song haha! |

The song is pretty straightforward... but just to give my opinion: it's about when you end a relationship and it seems like it's the end of the world. You think you will never love again, or even laugh again. Everything is tragic and taken out of proportion, until you realize you can move on, and that's the way things go... Nothing last forever and the end of a relationship is not the end of the world. People deal with more difficult things ("people's children die") and they get over it, so we shouldn't be so dramatic about it. It's about that time when you suddenly remember that person, and remember that years ago you were crying because of them and thought that would never bounce back... and now you can't even remember what his ears looked like :P |

I also love the simplicity of the record, Reg is always great at telling stories. And though I agree with the idea of the song showing how you can be kind to an unknown person, I think it goes a little further. I sense a certain loneliness in the narrator of this song... like if she's lacking something ("I have no wallet"). And then she finds what she is lacking in a completely unknown person, who has everything she wishes she had. This person has a past ("You were so young..."), a family ("Inside were pictures of your small family") and all these things we usually take for granted as everyday stuff (ie the Blockbuster card or the boots receipt). The wallet would be symbolize how well the person keeps these things... as instead of the narrator, who doesn't own a wallet. In a way, when she says "I keep my cards together with a blue rubber band" she means there's something she lacks, and the line about having only "pieces of paper and change" in her pocket would mean she feels empty. She has no family photo, no memories of youth, etc. So, to me this record is about loneliness... just my humble opinion! |
