| I'm on board with MountedTigerHead's methamphetamine idea. of course there's Kerouac and actual massachusetts and all that too but this album is king of the double meanings. The narrator has (in this girl) a drug buddy, and her friends are starting to talk. Pay no mind, take one more trip, watch the real world and its concerns fade out. "this is your first defense" is likely a double meaning of "this is my life, my best option for my future and so you should accept it" that the girl might have said to him, and also that she's defending her thesis at grad school--don't forget to entertain, those professors don't like to be bored with some dull presentation! If she does it right (at grad school) she'll be done and move on to her new life. but yes, this is his last defense, he's got nothing else left, he just thought the whole experience of sharing time as borderline-poor grad students meant a lot more than it did to her. so it goes. |
