I interpret the song as being about encouraging people in the arts to be more daring and to really put everything they have into their art. Lines and phrases such 'why so pathetic?','Quit acting so shy and unsure...', and 'Put your body on automatic' I think are a stab at all the straight faced bands who act like the most important part of being in a band is looking cool and deep in the video, resulting usually with musical and lyrical banalty. I think the title 'New Health Rock' refers to this, i.e. bands more interested in playing it safe than taking any risks etc. I think we all know the type of bands...:) The 'listen up every battle ever had...' lines are encouraging artists to treat their art like a battlefield and throw mind, body and soul into it, and not just worry about looking cool and reflective. In a nutshell I think its a song encouraging artistic imagination and courage, and is damning artistic conservatism. |
