I believe this song takes into account all the soul compromising things that she did to get to where she is. "ebony beauty pass the shade. the looking glass reflects" She's talking to herself, about her age, and looks, perhaps surgery. She's talking about the sex, the drugs, the things she has done to get where she is. The line "try to look surprised when they invite you to take your curtain call" is about how she fought hard and did things she may have regretted, to get where she is. As in, this shit just don't happen. You have to be ruthless even to yourself. I think this is one of the most interesting autobiographical songs of her current works. |
