This song makes me feel...absoloutly hopeless. This song makes me doubt everything about the man I love and the life I live. And yet I love it. This is my interpritation: "This is the moment that you know That you told her that you loved her, but you don't" -It's weird how the song starts with...I guess a turning point? He's realizing right at the beginning, that he doesn't love her, no matter how many times he said it. "You touch her skin and then you think That she is beautiful, but she don't mean a thing to me Yeah, she is beautiful, but she don't mean a thing to me" -I think that him and the girl are lying in bed, and he's like...touching her, but he knows that he doesn't love her. "I spent two weeks in Silver Lake The California sun cascading down my face" -This is where the story begins, I suppose. First, he's going to Silver Lake, for some reason. But it's not where he's permanently staying. "There was a girl with light brown streaks And she was beautiful, but she didn't mean a thing to me Yeah, she was beautiful, but she didn't mean a thing to me" -So this is when he first sees this girl, and he told himself he loved her from the start. "I wanted to believe in all the words that I was speaking As we moved together in the dark" -So we go right to them having sex. He's telling her things, that he loves her, and all this stuff, when he actually doesn't mean it. He's just saying it because he wants to have sex with her. "And all the friends that I was telling And all the playful misspellings" -I know that he was telling all of his friends about what him and this girl did. But I don't know what he means when he says "All the playful misspellings" "And every bite I gave you left a mark As tiny vessels oozed into your neck And formed the bruises That you said you didn't want to fade" -He's talking about giving her hickey's, and she's saying that she loves him and doesn't want him to fade away. She wants him to stay with her. "But they did and so did I that day" -The hickey's will fade, and so will he. He doesn't love her, and is afraid to stay committed to her, so he leaves. This, to me, is the most heartbreaking line in the song. It makes me cry everytime I hear it. "All I see are dark gray clouds In the distance, moving closer with every hour" -He's seeing disaster coming. He knows he has to end it to her, and he doesn't know how. But the impending doom is nearing. "So when you'd ask, "Is something wrong?" I'd think, "You're damn right there is But we can't talk about it now No, we can't talk about it now"" -She KNOWS something's wrong with him, but he refuses to tell her. He's trying to put off ending it. "So one last touch and then you'll go And we'll pretend that it meant something so much more" -She leaves him in bed, and goes back to wherever. She thinks that it meant they're in love, and he thinks that it's all fake. "But it was vile, and it was cheap And you are beautiful, but you don't mean a thing to me Yeah, you are beautiful, but you don't mean a thing to me Yeah, you are beautiful, but you don't mean a thing to me " -He knows what he did was wrong and dirty, but he doesn't love her, and nothing can change that. One of the most heartbreaking songs I've ever heard. |

I love the version of this song from the Across A Wire album. During the end of the song, Adam sings it with so much raw emotion. It's like you can actually feel his heart breaking while he sings it. All his words are sung with so much power and pain, and it makes it one of my top 3 Counting Crows songs. I think this song's about Adam's desire to feel any emotion whatsoever, and his desire to be someone different than who he is. That's just my opinion, though. |
