I think this song is about having a friendship with a self destructive person who doesn't have self awareness and follows a detrimental path for them and the relationships with other people.. Possibly it's a metaphor for narcissistic personality traits, which are notoriously difficult to work with.
The outro ("boy...") hints at aiding this person, medicating them and giving them opportunities, but they still follow the unenlightened path of greed or self indulgence. One of Brand New's best songs IMO |

This poem is a commentary on how America was built on a violent, inhumane legacy, and I think what it's getting at is that all that one needs in life is a good home and a family etc, and how everything else is basically bullshit. It also seems to be somewhat to do with black people, as the most mistreated people to ever live in America - however, they survive, and will continue to do so. |

I like this song, it's catchy, and since it's about lack of confidence and worries about meeting chicks or whatever, you should be encouraged by this song considering the guy who wrote it is now married to Zooey Deschanel, who I personally think is one of the hottest chicks out there. |
