Ah, this song - beautiful, if I do say so myself. The true meaning is not completely evident until the bridge, when Nick sings I did all I could And I gave everything But you had to go your way And that road was not for me. This song, the way I take it to mean, anyway, is pretty much capped inside that bridge and last chorus. It is speaking about a girl, and how the first person in this song really loved them. Its talking about this second person as a girl with a dream that will soon lead her away from everything in search of it. The first person says that Somehow I'm to blame For this neverending racetrack we call life. This means that the second person is probably upset with him about something, but she makes it seem like she thinks its his fault she's always in this 'race'. Hope to see you on the finish line. Alright, now we're getting down to it. The whole point is that this girl is on the 'racetrack', the 'road that was not for me'. The first person is telling her, just 'turn right, into my arms', you won't be alone, you might fall, but I'll see you at the finish line. He's trying to say that he's not to blame for this racetrack, but he's the cure. If she just turns to him, she'll reach the finish line. I'm not as 100% sure about this one as I was about 'black keys', but this is pretty much what I take it to mean. Enjoy this song even if it makes no sense to you :) <3 Jezzica |

Black Keys is one very brilliantly written song, in part because of the use of the metaphor, the 'black keys'. The song is about a girl that the writer (Nick) had dated, been friends with, etc. that he only saw one side of. The side he saw was this 'perfect rainbow' he speaks of. The 'black keys' metaphor comes in when she leaves, and he begins to learn these things about her. He learns the sharps and flats about her, (i.e. the sun proves that the world doesn't revolve around someone, and the sky lets her keep her pride). If you play piano, or even if you don't, (I did until I turned 3), you'd probably know that the black keys are the sharps and flats. So it basically means that what he saw were the white keys, the beautiful rainbow about the girl, but he never saw the black keys. And now he's saying that he thinks the black keys are probably the most beautiful thing about her. Now, this last part is a stretch, but I believe that it may be the meaning. The first part, 'the colors fade to gray' once she's gone, means that she was kind of like the color in his life. Now that she's gone, however, thats when Nick starts noticing the black keys. That ties in with the last part, 'sometimes a fight is better black and white'. He realizes that it was better if he hadn't seen her as a perfect rainbow. If he'd seen those black keys, maybe the fights would've been easier, and maybe she wouldn't have left. Even if you don't get the metaphor, its still a great song :) <3 Jezzica |
