To me, this is a psychoanalysis issue. It is an example of the struggle between the Id and the Super-Ego. I agree it could be about a one night affair or the moral dilemma of whether to terminate a pregnancy. I also think another possible dissection of the lyrics could show that this poetical song is showing the fight between faith and human desire. The religion she was brought up with is telling her to stay pure before marriage but she chose to go against her faith (she “breathed it out”) in a moment of passion and is now dealing with the aftermath and how regretful she feels- "The love we made, we can't erase it. Don't want to face it." The angel on her shoulder is "haunting" her now because she has to decide whether to amend her ways and deal with her sins in order to be forgiven for them or follow her heart and continue to act in this passionate fashion as she has a deep connection and “sweet, sweet” love for him. In the bridge where "The sun is coming down on me; Could fate be so unkind?" this is her worrying about the next life and the consequences of how the remorseful decision she once made will possibly affect her. She now, under the “Tick-Tock”, has to decide how to live out her future. |
