I guess the meaning of the song combines the two themes of Dave being an agnost and the death of his sister. The first two verses are about his sister's husband and how unexpected he turned into a murderer. "If martiants fell from the sky" I would interpret as a sudden event that shocks people. Something so unexpected and surreal that noone really knows how to handle. He questions "What would that do to god", i.e. religion seeks to explain everything, but how can religion explain such events. It is incompatibale with what Christianity teaches and, to my mind, refers to the limits of religion. He says "no one would believe it expept the fucking nut jobs" which I think tackles Atheists or Agnosts who are refusing to believe all they are being told about god. It is also about them being stigmatized as "crazy" from society. "I want to believe in Jesus", i.e. he wants to believe in the general goodness of people or in the fact that god helps out in things get tough. It is about infidels so wanting to believe in god. However, they might have experienced incredible pain. In case of his sister, how can there being a god? What god would allow things like that to happen. He cannot find his religious belief, but refuse to trust in god, i.e. "lean me up against Jesus". Just some of my thoughts ... |
