I had no idea what this song was about. In fact, I could not completely understand the words until I searched them up (not here). Then I somehow thought it was about mass destruction of the planet - - like from a nuclear bomb or something. It made sense - - the empty garden, nothing will grow there now, knocking and getting no answer. But after I read these responses, it makes perfect sense now. Cause he is calling for "Johnny." Still, I think in my head I still see the ruins of a city when I hear this song. I'm just weird. |

Maybe she just wants the hell out of the house. She is reaching puberty and he is giving her advice and perhaps he is asking her how far is she willing to go to get out? And in a big brotherly way, maybe he is saying it is not worth it to give in to the first fellow to come along no matter how much she wants to break away. He is telling her that her mother is worried about her. And I think when he sings "motoring" it means she is revving up her engines (figuratively), trying to speed up life. And he is telling her there is a big price to pay for that kind of fast living.

I think this song is about someone who is in a relationship that was doomed from the beginning. He has finally reached the point where he just cannot bend any further. He has given and given and given but he just can't give any more. It is his turn to call the shots (tables are meant for turning) and he is calling it quits for good (bridges are meant for burning) because they don't have or never have had the same idea about what their relationship is (the people and memories they join aren't the same).
Awesome song, awesome artist. Such a loss. |

I have tried to figure this out over and over. I kept thinking that it must have been a theme song to some t.v. series about lawyers, but I know that's wrong. After reading these reviews, I am still perplexed. Still, it is a catchy little tune. |
